Speccing a GPU loop

Background:

I'm looking to set up a GPU loop in a new build that I've been gradually accumulating the parts for. The CPU will be via an AIO cooler I have already bought so that part is covered (just waiting on devil's canyon to be shipping ... grrrr) - a a corsair H110 and the case is a carbide air 540.

I'd like to just cool a single card, but with the possibility of expanding later on to crossfire/SLI later on.

I'm planning to mount the AIO cooler rad across the top, the GPU rad at the front and the pump/res underneath the optical drive cage (in the same was OC do it for the Infinity Tesseract).

So, I have a shopping list as follows:

YOUR BASKET
1 x EK Water Blocks EK-DDC 3.2 PWM X-RES 140 £99.95
1 x Hardware Labs Black ICE Radiator GT Stealth 240 - XFlow £36.98
1 x Monsoon 16/11mm (ID 7/16 OD 5/8) Free Center Compression Fitting Six Pack - Orange £27.95
2 x Noiseblocker NB-eLoop Fan B12-P - 120mm PWM (2000rpm) £15.98 (£31.96)
1 x Mayhems Pastel - Orange Coolant 1L £14.99
3 x Primochill Primoflex Advanced Tubing 16/11 - Clear £5.99 (£17.97)
Total : £239.40 (includes shipping : £8.00).

Where I'm stuck is some details:

1 What about filling and draining ? I'm guessing I fill from the top of the res and then seal it up. Draining could be the reverse, just turn the whole PC upside-down. Is there a cleaner way - and what should I buy if there is ? The ball valves just confuse me. I'm probably being thick and not seeing how to connect them up.

2 I picked 16/11 diameter tubing based on a thread buried in the WC section. Is that ok ? One thing I've since noticed is that the angled monosoon fittings don't come in 16/11 only 16/10. Is that 1mm difference a big deal, or should I change everything to 16/10 so that rotary and angle fittings could be used ?

I've not chosen a graphics card yet, it will be best bang per buck I can get that can be blocked up.

....and finally, I'm attending the watercooling workshop, so want to be armed with a shopping list for the discount available on the day (and the more sociable reason of not hijacking rjkoneil's time that he's already given up for free).

you would usually have a T-piece at the lowest point in your loop, with the ball valve on there. so the fluid goes through undisturbed, but you can open the valve to drain.
you should also have a stop fitting on the valve, for extra security.

Bumping my own thread after some more research and making darn sure I have this list to hand come the workshop !

YOUR BASKET
2 x Gigabyte Radeon R9 290 OC WindForce 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (GV-R929OC-4GD) £319.99 (£639.98)
1 x EK Water Blocks EK-DDC 3.2 PWM X-RES 140 £99.95

1 x XSPC G1/4" Plug (Black Chrome) £1.55
Total : £1,089.19 (includes shipping : ).

Route will be fairly simple: pump --> gpu --> gpu --> rad --> pump

Gone for the XFlow rad as it should be neater - and shorter tubing runs.

Apart from some items not being in stock, does anyone see any flaws in this spec ?

Can you fit bigger/more rads into your case? If so I would do that and incorporate the cpu into the loop.

Better temps and cleaner loop should be achievable then.

Hmmm .. food for thought ... Will look at dropping to one GPU but spending more on it for a better card. A big factor when looking through earlier was the current stock levels at OC - which is probably a stupid criteria when I think about it.

Also noticed I missed the radiator fans in the second list !

Ok ... so I can fit a 360 rad in, provided I put the fans outside the case, so a dual gpu shopping list would now look like:

2 x Gigabyte Radeon R9 290 OC WindForce 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (GV-R929OC-4GD) £319.99 (£639.98)

1 x XSPC PSU Bridging Connector (24 Pin) £1.3
Total : £1,173.38 (includes shipping : ).

I can tweak this tomorrow when at the workshop if a single card solution would look better.

Spent a chunk of today failing to get a GPU-less build working. Finally sorted with help from OC forums members.

Did you buy your H110 new and is it still within the return period? It's just that the price of that would've paid for a good cpu block and 240 rad...

Also, I'd pay 6 quid more for one of these if you're happy paying around £100.
Could always save a few bob and go for a DCP 4.0.

Given my mucking around with a build today, trying to return the AIO would be really taking the mick. It is definitely used !

I picked that pump as when I looked it seems to come with the floor mounting I wanted ... but looking again I can't see that it does. A few extra quid is neither here nor there, so going for the 140 version instead of the 100:

YOUR BASKET
2 x Gigabyte Radeon R9 290 OC WindForce 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (GV-R929OC-4GD) £319.99 (£639.98)
1 x EK Water Blocks EK-D5 Vario X-RES 140 (incl. pump) £107.99
2 x EK Water Blocks EK-FC R9-290(X) - Acetal+Nickel Rev.2.0 £87.95 (£175.90)
1 x Hardware Labs Black ICE Radiator GT Stealth 360 £49.99
1 x Monsoon 16/11mm (ID 7/16 OD 5/8) Free Center Compression Fitting Six Pack - Chrome £27.95

1 x EK DCP Mounting Plate Kit with Anti Vibration Mountings £4.49
1 x XSPC G1/4" Plug (Black Chrome) £1.55
1 x XSPC PSU Bridging Connector (24 Pin) £1.3
Total : £1,195.51 (includes shipping : £8.00).

So... having been to the workshop I think I was being possibly a little ambitious. I will attack this in baby steps.

Step 1: Use the AIO and a single GPU loop:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Sapphire Radeon R9 290 Tri-X 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (11227-03-40G) £299.99
1 x EK Water Blocks EK-D5 Vario X-RES 140 (incl. pump) £107.99
1 x EK Water Blocks EK-FC R9-290(X) - Acetal+Nickel Rev.2.0 £87.95
1 x Hardware Labs Black ICE Radiator GT Stealth 240 - XFlow £36.98
1 x Monsoon 16/11mm (ID 7/16 OD 5/8) Free Center Compression Fitting Six Pack - Matte Black £27.95
1 x Corsair SP120 Performance Series High Pressure - Dual Pack (CO-9050008-WW) £22
1 x EK Water Blocks EK-FC R9-290X Backplate - Black £20.99
1 x Mayhems Pastel - Orange Coolant 1L £14.99
3 x Primochill Primoflex Advanced Tubing 16/11 - Clear £5.99 (£17.97)
1 x Aqua Computer Ball Valve Female Thread G 1/4 without Fittings £5.99
2 x Monsoon 16/11mm (ID 7/16 OD 5/8) Free Center Compression Fitting - Matte Black £5.29 (£10.58)
1 x EK DCP Mounting Plate Kit with Anti Vibration Mountings £4.49
1 x XSPC G1/4" Plug (Black Chrome) £1.55
1 x XSPC PSU Bridging Connector (24 Pin) £1.3
Total : £670.30 (includes shipping : £8.00).

Step 2: would be replacing the AIO CPU cooler, adding a 360 rad and a second WC GPU.

Step 3: There is no step 3.

Any obvious missing pieces in the shopping list for the GPU only loop above ?
