Hello everyone :)

My specs are:

E6600
Asus P5W DH Deluxe
GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C4 800MHz

The Asus board is very picky about memory and theres lots of problems running an FSB over 360 with manual memory timings.

My memory is set to run at 4-4-4-12 @ 2.1V

The CPU itself overclocks to 3.6GHz easily @ 400FSB (9x400), however with an FSB this high auto SPD settings have to be used.

I believe its down to shoddy programmed SPD Timings by GeIL.... take a look

geil.jpg

400Mhz should be 4-4-4-12

I've noticed 2 programs that I think will help: Thaiphoon Burner + SPDTool

Is this outlook going to be successful in helping me or am I doomed to wait until Asus try to fix the board?

Cheers

Hold on, whats the problem here? Are you saying that you can't hit really high FSBs if you take your memory settings off auto?

And you wanna take them off auto so you can tighten them from 5-5-5 to 4-4-4 or did I miss something?

The problem is certain sticks of memory wont boot at their default settings when this board is set to an FSB of over 360.

When using an FSB of 360+ auto SPD has to be used in the bios instead of manual. When you use auto the memory times are very slack as you can see in the image below

I'm led to believe its something to do with the way this board checks mem settings on boot.

The sticks that do work on manual settings over 360FSB seem to be those that are programmed correctly.

As you can see from the image in the first post, the 400Mhz setting should be 4-4-4-12 instead of 5-5-5-18.

Just to show everyone the mem working at 4-4-4-12, here you go. Only a small overclock of the FSB here (its at 320)

yeh m8 discovered this a month back

you need ram like this

cellshockih9.jpg

the crosair 8500 ram set will also cause thes problems as it has poor SPD timings

the comaptable timings is a lot of BS because all ddr2 ram will boot @ 1.8 1.9 volts @ 5.5.5.15 without any timings set in the SPD tables.

I noticed you said you had a guide to repogram your geil memory. Did you ever try it? Worth a shot?

My budget was pretty tight, didn't have enough cash to splash out on really expensive ram :(

programing the memory SPD requires hexworkshop
so you would have to sent back to geil explaining
to correctly program them for the asus 975 chipset.

hers what you do, you take an image from the memory bios
then you edit it with hex workshop the actual SPD tables
i dont no how to do this part but if you find some1 with good timings and the excact same memory you could just copy and flash wich makes it 99% easier.

hers the timings i tested out the GEIL, this is the correct way your geil should have been from factory, who really buys high performance ram to have it defaulted to 5.5.5.15 @ 333 max bandwith its total wrong.

4.4.4.12 @ 2.1 volts ddr (800) 400
3.4.4.8 @ 2.1 volts ddr (667) 333
3.3.3.8 @ 1.95 volts ddr(533) 266

so send that to geil and tell them your no happy
i already sent emails to them, i cant be arsed with RMA so i punted them
and bought real memory with correct timings programmed into the SPD.

no more fsb problems over 360 i can boot @ 420 fsb 1.1 with memory @ 4.4.4.12 @ 2.1 volts

yeah i think this is over my head unless someone else has a guide or something. probably just better to leave it and see if asus comes up with anything in regards to their bios.

also i dont understand when you said someone else might have good timings with the same memory.... how would that be possible? surely all the sticks of this geil memory have the same spd timings table?

thanks though ;)

its ony the 975 asus boards that seem to be affected,
as we no the 965 chipset has better memory adjustments
so it allows memory to run, not in sync

i think its defently a safty feature it wont allow your ram
to match FSB, because it takes a reading from your SPD timings table.
so it sees poor SPD timings and wont allow your high spec ram to peform
as it should.

solution 1 i dont think this can be fixed by a bios update
solution 2 send ram back to be reprogrammed
solution 3 buy only gskill cellshock team extreme all pc6400

that program wont allow you to change the actual SPD tables
it only allows you to save the file from memory make changes to unimportant things, the actual SPD tables have to be hexxed.

solution 2 looks to be my best bet!

ill contact GeIL.

so theres no way at all to reprogram it myself?

here's the email i received from geil a few weeks ago

"I believe you have bought an old reversion of DDR2-800 ultra.
GeIL had updated all DDR2-800 SPD since June. (Lies this part)
However, Your GeIL module is tested with DDR2-800 spec.
Where do you live? I will try to arrange RMA for you."

Steven Kuo

GeIL

as i said i just sold them i wasn't going to wait for a RMA back to china or were ever they take them

quicker just to sell and buy better
you will get a good price for the geil as they work perfect on the intel 965 chipset.

I sent an email, i'll see what they say. The old revision thing must be crap, I only bought this ram like 3 weeks ago!

Thanks for all your help

**wonder if overclockers UK would swap the memory for the memory you stated if I pay the difference...

its been so long since the last post on this topic just wondering if there is any update on the Reprograming of the SPD Settings for GeIL 2GB.

i found a geil.spd file which changes the part name to CL3-3-3DDR2 somthing (sorry im at work cant check) will this make any difference ?
