Just installed Vista 32bit Home Premium, which asked me where to installed, it listed both my Sata and IDE.

Installed to Sata went fine etc, but now my backup drive IDE which is listed in Device Manager is not working. I have uninstalled - reinstalled etc, anyone know whats up.

Screenshots, its the bottom one WDC (Western Digital 120GB)

aghhh just seen disc management, but it says I need to convert to "Basic Disk" and I will lose my data stored.

Prob is that this is a backup drive with all my programs, music, videos etc!

Hmm, I think I've found the problem and you ain't going to like it....

Home Premium doesn't support dynamic volumes, which it sounds like you have, only business & ultimate do.

Big post in another forum, might be a help

Thank you for your help, just put my norton ghost disc in and hopefully I can copy the files to my C:\ in the interim, and then convert the other disc to basic, then copy the files over again.

The dskprobe way looks too risky, I have a lot of family photos etc saved :(, and my music collection of 5 years!

What a palarva!

im in Ghost from bootup, and can view all my backup files, just copying and pasting them now from D:\Backup to C:\Restore folder!

Microsoft hang your head in shame this sucks!

Agreed, I had figured that Home Premium was probably the best option if I was to go with Vista but I've got a 1.75Tb Dynamic disk with all my photos and media on.

Now the last time I looked Basic Disks had a partition size limit of 2Tb, I wonder if this has changed with Vista.

Especially as I am upgrading from MCE2005 XP Pro base which did support Dynamic Disks.

Huge H/d's you have my biggest is 120GB :D
