PS3 UK Demand

if the PS3 was the same price as the 360 was at launch at £299 i would have brought one regardless of what games was on it, and i expect a lot of people think that way also

Guys to be fair i didnt mention anything about how good or bad PS3 is in here.

Take Blu Ray as another example if their wasnt many films on it would that have a reflection on your desire for it. Yet if their is a decent range with some films that do appeal to you then chances are your going to be more swayed to get the machine?

What typically creates demand for a console so i fail to see why discussing the games on release or shortly after isnt relivent? Just like the price is also a factor but not personally for me.

Yeah it wouldn't surprise me.
Tbh it is why the xbox didn't sell at launch in the UK especially, because it came in at 299, and i think the PS2 had already had a price cut. The PS3 will plod along at 425 then i think Sony will start offering incentives to the stores for deals and bargains in the summer.

Or how it dosent have any killer app and how live is better at 40pounds a year. :p

Thats funny but the reply was a plea for Fanboys to drop the attack on live or the fact it costs money. Why live was even mentioned then in the thread is the question.

We had 360 PS3 comparisons long before i appeared.

Just cancelled one of my pre-orders, no point trying to make profit now :)

Will probably cancel my other pre-order next week, although Xmen 3 and Casino Royale for free is tempting...

Dear PS3 thread...

I am writing to you on this occasion to establish if you are satisfied with the way your thread has been handled...................... :D

Anyway, back to the  . I think the whole "groundbreaking game" debate is a bit pointless these days. Very few games are...and it doesn't necessarily make the console. I would and I am sure many people would rather have good updated versions of the existing games that they know and love. Take GTA4, F1, Tiger Woods, Pro Evo (hopefully the next will be better), MGS, GT, PGR, Tekken, VF, DOA, Halo etc etc. Quality Sequals are where its at 1st and foremost.

Infact I would argue the more groundbreaking the game the more opportunity to detach you from real life enjoyment there is which is a bad thing imo. So my take on a few groundbreaking or unique types of games.

1) Forget the Nintendo Wii, its not really groundbreaking but it is one step removed from the actual sport or activity it emulates. I would say its more of a downgrade from real life than an upgrade from gaming. Go get out, play tennis, bowling etc etc. (kk so this doesnt work with Zelda ;) )

2) Games like Guitar Heroes, whilst possibly groundbreaking ish again are a down grade from real life, "tbh learn to play a guitar instead its more fun".

3) World of Warcraft (ok so not console but) which is really groundbreaking in its popularity, formula for accessibility and fun with the mega downside of its huge addictiveness and ability to absorb its players away from real life. Doesn't replace a few mates, warhammer etc etc on the table and a few beers.

4) Gran Turismo. Ok so this one is a classic and when it came out nothing was close to what it offered in the whole car-tuning-racing-variety thing. Can't really say go out and rip up your local motor way in a 1000bhp skyline.

So the way I have taken the list may be a bit extreme but at the moment, I feel the PS3 not only offers no real groundbreaking games (the PC is imo the benchmark for FPS, 3PS and the mouse/keyboard ability > pretty graphics and a few more enemies) but offers no real good sequals or ports of existing games that haven't been played to death on the 360 or PC, like Obilvion etc.

Chances are that the ports to the PS3 will have been played by the majority of the gaming population over the last 18 months on another console. I can't imagine all having waited that extra year or so for the PS3 and not tried some of the "nex gen titles". Six Axis etc is a gimik not groundbreaking. Same for the Xbox 360, nothing groundbreaking just the latest graphics on a console.

Neither console is Nex Gen really since the PC easily holds the crown and we are used to seeing pretty graphics etc etc. The consoles are not up against Pentium II/III with a Geforce 2 anymore.

So again demand is lacklusture for now...This christmas and the GTA4 pack time will be the clincher. Its going to take some uber titles to get the PS3 moving and the progress of Blu Ray. Still if everyone who owns a HD tv in the UK purely buys the PS3 for the BR player (assuming prices of players stay more than the console) then the demand will significantly increase.

I mean no average family is going to buy a £500 guitar heroes pack over a £100 PS2 guitar heroes. Possibly a victim of the PS2s sucess.

Xmen 3 free ??? Is that with a selected bundle somewhere - I had heard that CR was free when you register the PS3 online and think this is a decent enough film to do it for

.

We do need inspirational games though - whether its just the likes of motorstorm online (where every race is run on a different track I believe) maybe not completely unique but developing things for extended playing, and to push other programmers / developers to improve the coding otherwise gamers in general will lose out

My main point however is more an FYI in that by the summer there are meant to be a few choices of new BR stand alone players around same price of the PS3 (£400-£500) and to my mind unless the purchaser is an audiophile or high spec kit, a ps3 should still going to be better value due to what can be done with the hdd, wireless etc etc, but thats certainly personal choice.

Hmm was just in New York last week, with $600 PS3's. Was very tempted but thought I wouldn't be able to get it through customs so left it. Unfortunately, don't get paid until last working day of each month but am wanting to get a PS3. What do you reckon are the chances of being able to walk into a shop a week after release and pick one up?

I'd wait a week and get a new one of the bay for less than retail. Some ebayers are in for a shock as they try and off load them.

well i want one and the price doesnt help and they'll still fly off the shleves no doubt, but the main thing at the moment is im saving for my summer hols. Thats gonna be around 7-800 quid so the ps3 will have to wait. Probably the same for a lot of people. Just bad timing on Sonys part.

Actually in one sense its good timing - they dont get the bad press that units arent available and yet they are reasonably assured to sell 50- 70% pretty quickly (150,000 consoles sold) not too bad for anyone ...... Im not saying of course that some or even most wont end up on ebay, but they will already have been paid for on the street

Also it gives Sony about 7 months to really build up a good catalogue of games (and bluray films) for Xmas and to ramp up production for stock to ship in October time if not before.

As with any launch this big there will be some manufacturing faults, and shops will have stock for immediate replacement (a number of psu failures for the X360 at launch had people waiting weeks)

Good ways and bad ways of looking at everything :D

The place that i have mine ordered from is giving X-Men free away with it, a high street store.

This is one of the reasons I am swaying towards a PS3 as opposed to a stand alone player. My way of thinking is for the money I can get a blu-ray player now with the added benefit of it being a console aswell. Plus the fact Casino Royale is out soon. Yes £425 is a lot of money for a console but you get a lot for your money.

My thought process too , even if I upgrade to a decent BR player by Xmas /new year (time of my bonus) the ps3 will have had a decent work out by this time and I will still be gaming and using it as an av hub

I hope anyway - I havent touched my x360 in 6 months (just after TDU was released, one game I wont be getting on the PS3 in a hurry)

The other thing of course is (hopefully) all ps3 titles should be a little cheaper than anything from MS stable - fingers crossed anyway
