Howdy,

My current PC was my first PC I have built by myself using all the parts from OCuK about 2 years ago... its getting on now, and I am planning on building a new gaming rig very soon. Last time I gave a budget here and you built me the PC as I had no clue what went with what.

Well tbh I still am not 100% sure what will work with what, but I got together a bunch of components in my OCuK shopping basket, and I want to ask you:

1. Do these components work together to build the PC? And have I missed anything off?

2. Should I change anything... without uping the budget too much of course :)?

Anyway, heres a copy and paste of my basket:

Cool... I got it right :)

Is there anything you would change? Mainly, is the RAM good? And is a 620w PSU a wise move... I know it wont have a problem running all that, but in the future if I where to upgrade?

I don;t really want to go higher on cash though... less would be good though :)

Also, is now a good time to build a new PC? i.e. Is there a new GeForce due for release soon? I deffo wanna get a Quad Core Intel CPU as they are the next generation... just other tihngs I'm not sure of.

Any input you can give will be cool!

Everything is compatible as far as I am aware, I might not bother with the Raptor though, they are expensive for the performance. Also if I was getting one I don't think I'd bother with a Raptor X unless I was actually going to see the clear top. :)

You could consider getting the Corsair 620w instead as it has been demonstrated with quad-core and SLi'd 8800 series cards.

The Ram might be slightly overkill unless you are overclocking a fair bit as PC6400 would easily do but it is up to you.
 
Yeah, it should all work, but if it was my money I'd drop the Quadro for an E6600, get a 680 based motherboard, drop the Raptor for a larger Barracuda and get a decent cooler.

Save some cash for when Quadros are better value and there's some multi-threaded games that will exploit them. :)

I have a Audigy 2 ZS in my current PC... is it worth upgrading to the x-fi? Or should I save £25 and keep my Audigy?

I really wanna keep the Quad core CPU, as I know I will be getting one of them soon anyway, so no point in wasting dough on a C2D when I would only buy a Quad after anyway :)

Also whats the advantage of the 680 mobo? I'm not fussed bout mobo as I wont really overclock it (not for a long time anyway) so it will stay at stock... and I only really want the mobo to make the PC work... so the cheapest mobo will do me!

Also, you suggest the E6600... why not the E6700?

Any more suggestions?

Just to give you the option of SLI in the future, and based on the amount you're spending, I guess. The 650 is technically an SLI chipset but it only gives 2x8 PCI lanes in SLI so any cards requiring x16 PCI lanes (such as, well, most of them really, including your 8800) won't run in SLI on a 650 based board like the P5NE. Don't know whether that's important to you.

I suggested the E6600 because it should clock to the same levels as an E6700 for less cash, but if you're not overclocking...
 
Yep I am with you d1am0nd g33z3r and you and trojan over on the CPU board have swayed me to the E6600... cos people have clocked it to 3.5ghz :eek:

I will never run SLi, as I really have no interest in that. In the future if I want more power I will buy the newest model GPU... just got no interest in SLi, so I will stick with the cheaper mobo I think, thanks for telling me though!

Anyway I have changed a few things and knocked the price down considerably. Please look at the below and tell me if anything does not work together? Or if you think I should change something to knock the performance up a bit (without knocking the price up too much).

Note: The two 250gb hdd are perfectly good for me.. I actually want the 200gb ones, but they have a 8mb cache so I went for the extra 50gb.

Yes you'll be happy with the CPU, if you find it struggles in the coming months, the quad could come down in price by then anyway....

I don't think you'll find the C2D will struggle though tbh.. ;)

8800s run fine in sli x8, evidence is avail all over net of this. Dont fall for the nvidia marketing hype, theres a reason they said they only work on x16s, because then everyone would go out and buy the 680s for 3x the price.

Quadcore probably not worth it at the moment. Theyll be coming down in price when the refresh comes along.
Can i just ask, what is this pc actually for? its pretty high spec, will you even make use of it?
 
it willl be specd' out for gaming... tbh it will be used for work mainly (I work from home) building websites, but I want to buy a good spec PC that will be ready to play games.

I have stalker at the moment and I love it, but I cant get into it properly cos my current PC struggles abit to play it... so I want a PC that will handle it.

Also I will be wanting CRYSIS... and I want a pc that can handle that too!

C2D it is then... the Quads are very expensive. What will be the limit of the current mobo though? I mean the mobo must only be able to support up to a certain speed CPU? So when the next few higher spec Quadros come out, I wont be able to get them I assume cos they will be too fast?

Let's hope so huh :) I hope the Artice Cooler 7 was the best cooler for ocing the E6600... although at £18 you can't complain really can you :)

Just hope I get it all tomorrow!!!

Should have had really good results from that cooler, whilst others haven't. I think its a bit hit and miss - it is only £18 like you say. Be interesting to see what it performs like.

Well if you think that you in fact saved about 1/3 of the original price with negligible loss in performance for most applications it suddenly doesn't look so bad. ;)

The Arctic Freezer 7 is a pretty decent cooler, there are better but they tend to cost around double the price. :)
 
I suppose your right... those quads cost an arm and a leg!

I was gonna go for the Tuniq Tower, but I read somehwere that someone had problems fitting it to the mobo I have bought... and I have the Artice Freezer Pro 64 on my X2 4400+... and I like it, as its quiet and keeps it cool at 2.6ghz.
