Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "LGA775 Kentsfield" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail
OcUK 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-8500C5 1066MHz Dual Channel Kit
Gigabyte GA_P35_DQ6 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
Tuniq Tower 120 CPU Cooler
+
8800GTX @ 648/2000
quad RAID0

The above graphics card in my old system (AMD 4400 @ 2.7ghz) scored 9900 in 3dmk06 & Shadowrun with 15 bots dropped to 30fps.
now
quad core @ 3ghz / 430 bus / 1720 fsb, RAM @ 1075mhz
3dmk06=13033, Shadowrun with 15 bots drops to 90fps.

Had a bit of a problem screwing the heatsink to the board because of the huge slab of copper under the board.
This meant I had to jerry-rig things a bit.
Also as there's now a lot of metal under the board it don't fit on the board tray very well, I call this pic 'the bent mobo':

Now for some fun:
Managed run it at 3.5ghz, although found it to be quicker at 3ghz/higher bus.
Will reach Vista at 3.6ghz but as soon as run prime it dies as the temps quickly rise to 85c.
Will post at 3.7ghz.
I recon with water cooling this beast will do 3.8ghz
Found the CPU ceiling at 430mhz.
RAM won't do much more than 1075mhz, although have not played with their voltages much.

CPU-Z & mbm showing 4 cores + global cpu temp + system temp in yellow, although recently the 'global cpu temp' has become stuck at 39c no matter the load  , I found the mbm/core2 plugin for showing all core temps to be about 15c over than the actual temp, so load temp is 72c:

It seams to be running stable at 3ghz & suspect it will do more.
Lost Planet still gives the same fps as my old AMD..(thats an emulator for you) ...LOL.

Nice work mate!

Could you go into a bit more detail about how its quicker at 3.0 than at 3.5? I understand its something to do with the FSB straps or something?

//strokes easy to understand HTT bus :p

sure...

9x380fsb = 3420 / 950 RAM
7x430fsb = 3010 / 1075 RAM

I think because the fsb/RAM is higher it more than compensates 410mhz core clock.
Its early days yet, I'm still testing.
Right now I'm trying 8x435 = 3480 / 1088 RAM ...just hope the CPU can withstand 435fsb as it dies at 440fsb.

So a 125mhz increase in mem speed gives a bigger boost than a 410mhz increase in CPU speed? Must be rather bandwith limited!

What are the FSB 'straps' that people mention then?

(sorry for the questions, im slowly cooking my 3800+ and it may need replacing)

72c @ 3ghz.

Christ these things run hot. Im even considering a basic watercoling system, possibly the corsair nautilus if this tuniq tower doesn't reduce temps from the alomst 80c im getting.

I've just stuck these silent fan things on my tuniq & they are helping.. can now run at 8x420=3360/1050ram, 1.5v
Will tidy up with cable ties soon :p

i think you are supposed to remove the copper plate under the mobo when fitting an aftermarket cooler

What temps under load?

phew, I only re-enabled the write cache on the hard-drives & 1 left the raid array... oops. anyway back up & running now

Under load with 4 primes its now hitting 74c & with graphics load I guess 80c tops which is ok.

Thats at 1.5v though? can you not get the vcore any lower?

New clocking/volts/temps update & still think theres more left in the old .65nm beast with a few more fans LOL.

Interesting how the CPU volts drop under load.

I think the 4x mbm temps must be on-chip & the other temp from the IHS.
These temps are not with 3D though, so maybe another 5-10c running a munchy game for hours.

3dmk06 now 13400 with g80gtx @ 648/2052.

What sort of cooling would i need for 3Ghz on a Q6600, it will be GO btw.

Dunno about the 'go' chip but I'd get a good cooler around £30 & run the fan on mb voltage control so it runs quiet when idling & fast when working.
