Any one been to see this tribute band? They are up this way in a week or so and might go watch the show? I think they are a relatively new act?

I did go see Whole Lotta Led tail end of last year, and they can play alright, but on stage they look and act nothing like Led Zeppelin did, on the other hand after a quick look at The Led Zeppelin Story's web site, these guys actually look like Led Zeppelin on stage.

I love Zeppelin music but never got to see them live, did see Page and Plant though, wondering if anyone has seen this particular tribute band and can recommend or not?

Heck ... I'll probably go anyway ;)

I've only ever seen two tribute bands and thats Sabbath and Led Balloon.
Tribute bands just don't yank my chain and they remind me of Stars In Their Eyes.
However, I'd appreciate them more if they didn't try to look like them.

Your probably right about *some* Tribute bands, should not be looking like the originals to much, Its one thing playing their music as a tribute, its another thing wanting to look like them ... or pretend you are them, in fact I'm wondering if the members of the Led Zeppelin Story are actually wearing wigs? LOL.

If they can eke out a living from it, fair play to them. aren't you in some kind of Rock tribute band Mr Poole :)

I'm intrigued though, and at the end of the day, Led Zeppelin are never going to play live again and I doubt if Page and Plant will either? So these scraps are all we have left for Led Zeppelin Live, or I could just try playing my guitar better

Been doing some phone calls, and myself and some mates will probably be going to see them, will drop in by here to let you know how it went, its not going to be an expensive night out, but it will be fun.

Don't get me wrong though, Tribute bands are now major business, I know you have seen the original Led Zeppelin Mr Poole, but Rock music is timeless, and many people who were simply not old enough when Zeppelin and Pink Floyd and others toured were of age to see them (or even born) these acts are like a simulation of how it was ... The Australian Pink Floyd Show in particular are now nearing what Floyd did in terms of stadium with production and light shows, right down to hiring old Floyd tour crew, Laser shows, and giant inflatables.

Tribute bands are here to stay, and that's a good thing IMHO.

As an after-thought ... I hardly ever watch Stars in Their Eyes, but I watched it a week or so ago, how did that little kid who did Noddy Holder get on?

Wish I'd seen Slade live !! I can remember as a kid when Slade played TOTP's live, one of the few TOTP bands that never mimed.

Led Balloon wear wigs and false moustaches.

I suppose its a tribute to rock bands but we don't emulate any of them.
We do 9 AC/DC numbers but keep at least 2 other songs in between.

Only 4 times :D

My daughter shouted me in for Noddy but George Formby won it

Sorry to disillusion you but Slade did mime on TOTP and I've got plenty of evidence. There was a great DVD released at christmas called Very Best Of (white cover) and it features videos from TOTP and other shows. However, the coup de grace is a live video recording of the SLADE ALIVE album which I must have played 6 times since I had it. SLADE ALIVE is one of the best live albums ever. I got to see Slade live 3 times and they were one of the greatest live acts I've ever seen. The new Slade are awful.

How on earth can you not emulate a band if you play like them? sincere or not, you are playing tribute to them?

I don't do semantic games.

............

I know you have seen the original Led Zeppelin Mr Poole :)

Amazing ... and I'm very jealous, how old are you? I'm 47, so I'm guessing you must be older. How old were you on your first Zep gig? What were your early memories of that one?

OK Thanks, I was wrong, I'll accept Slade never performed live on TOTP. I might have been thinking of SAHB. However, just like you were wrong about the Australian Pink Floyd Show and Stoke origins (inofensive smiley edited because of OcUK rules about to many smileys in a post)

We all make mistakes

Sayin.

As a final word Mr Poole, not looking for trouble here, but its hard to talk with you as someone whom I consider equal of knowledge to me as regards the Rock circus, without the expectation I'm going to get trampled upon from one massive ego to another, perhaps that's why I hardly ever post here anymore?

That said ... I don't care what pub band you play in mate, I came on here with a friendly topic, and you blew me off with post dissection reply's, once you go that way, its downhill, especially if you talk down to people and brag about how great you are, or what you've done and seen.

I still maintain going to see the latest Rock Tribute acts is an OK thing to do, and I dont see any harm in checking out the Led Zeppelin Story over a few beers with my mates.

Sorry.

1 -I don't play in a rock tribute band. We are a bunch of old men who play in a two bit rock band playing cover versions. Nothing to see here - move along.

2 - I'm 48 in May. Saw Led Zeppelin in 1971 when I was 13 and it was magical even though I didn't really know anything about them. I'd only heard them a few weeks before and bought their back catalogue (3 albums) off a neighbour. What I can remember is that they seemed to mess about a lot (jamming).

3 - Yes, I was way wrong about APF and I was talking about it on saturday to the woman who misled me which is a pub where my non tribute band plays at. I didn't say that Slade NEVER played live on TOTP. All the clips I have are miming. SAHB mimed on OGWT when I thought they were live when I was younger. In fact, get the OGWT DVD's and you'll be amazed how many of those old early 70's acts were miming. It really upset me when I bought them. I was conned.

4 - Thats a shame because I've respected every post you've ever made because of your knowledge and I love to be put right (eg APF).

5 - Why should you be bothered about my band, they're nothing on a scale of zero and I never asked you to be bothered. However, as long as local landlords want to pay us then we'll turn up. I'm still waiting for the new breed to take all us old uns over so I can retire.
I honestly didn't know that dissecting posts was offensive because i've seen it done all over the forums - if that offends you then sorry.
If talking about my gig experiences offends you then I'm sorry but I certainly don't think I'm great because I've seen a few.
I like to do it to wind Big Kev up really.

6 - I never said that going to see a tribute act wasn't OK - I don't like watching them. Millions of people go to see them so they must be doing something right. I prefer to go see bands doing their own stuff or a mixture of covers.

7 - I'll just take it that you completely read my post wrong.
Like I said, you are a poster I look forward to reading.
Sad to see you go.

I'm not going anywhere, just see less interest here for me as time goes on.

Perhaps if you hadn't interrupted about the Led Zep tribute band I mentioned, we might have seen some genuine reply's about them, but what's done is done. I've made up my mind to go see them anyway LOL.

Mr Poole, whatever it is you do with your band, its fine, I'm sure it is, and I have nothing whatsoever against you or your band, rest assured about that.

Anyway, its spring and its a fun time ... The daddy of all Tribute bands The Australian Pink Floyd Show are kicking off the UK 2006 tour in 2 days time, so we are bound to see some remarks on the forums about them ... I say cut these people some slack, they may or may not have seen the real Floyd like you and I have done ... for those interested in the Aussie Floyd, here is a vid clip of them in production for the 2005 shows, the 2006 shows are going to be different, diverse and better.

Bring it on for tribute bands, if the originals wont or cant play live anymore.

Aussie Floyd preparing for 2005 tour

I once saw a Zep tribute band called "Graf Zeppelin". None of them made any attempt to look like the band (singer was a right fat ****er) but if you closed your eyes you'd think you were hearing the real thing, but of studio quality rather than the typically rough live sound.

They made my night when they took my request (Since I've Been Loving You).

I say cut these people some slack,

1 - I don't know what you've been reading, you're getting too way out there now and reading something I haven't wrote. I haven't told you not to go and see them. I don't know what your problem is.

2 - Why do you keep mentioning my band? I don't understand - we are nobodys on an island full of nobodys. We are just an insignificant pebble on a beach - going nowhere. If you think I'm the type who 'wants to get somewhere' then think again. I've just sacked the drummer because he's got big ideas (big ideas to me is travelling 10 miles from my house).

3 - Cut what people some slack? I don't know what you're reading. If people want to go and see tribute bands then thats fine by me but don't expect me to go. I can't see what your problem is.

I suggest you go and read my posts again or don't post until you're sober.

Blimey Mr Bulbous have you got dmpoole wrong. I might sound like a stalker but he's one of the most genuine blokes I know in real life and is 100% humble and doesn't know what a talent he has. When he walks in a pub everybody shakes his hand and gets advice from him which must count for something. I've seen his band four times and yes they are a two bit non tribute band but what a bloody band. He will spend more time talking about other local bands than he does his own and he's always there encouraging local talent and helping. He even shouts bands names out from the stage to go and see. Why you're bringing up his band in this thread is irrelevant and I've never seen him boast about his band on these forums. He does talk about a lot of experiences though and if that upsets you well tough. I also know that he loves to be proved wrong and I remember your Floyd thread. For somebody who is a know-all he certainly asks a lot of questions on these forums. I think you ought to apologise.

Anyway, I love tribute bands and I've seen three Zep tribute bands inc Led Balloon, Whole Lotta Led and Fred Zeppelin. Haven't seen Led Zep Story but as Mr Poole once said to me at a gig, if you're in a tribute band then you must be way above good and way above the average pub band.

Forgot to mention after talking to a workmate that dmpoole has turned down two well known AC/DC tribute bands and also turned down 'THE' Nazareth. Dan McAfferty actually rang him two years ago and asked him to take over but dmpoole said that Nazareth without McAfferty would be a tribute band and declined. I went to see Nazareth a couple of months ago and thank god McAfferty decided to stay - dmpoole is good but not that good.

On the subject of Tribute Bands I went to see 'The Stone Roses Experience' formerly 'The Complete Stone Roses' and they rock had an absolutely brilliant night and would highly recommend them to anyone that was/is into the whole indie experience.

I'll give you your fiver when I see you again.

Just let me add that I personally think that anybody who plays in a TB is far above the average musicians. To have the dedication to sit down and learn note for note the works of another band shows excellent musicianship. This includes the drummers, bassists and keyboard players etc. Its not so hard for the singers unless they want to do every ooh and ahh in the right place but most pub bands usually skirt around their own versions where the tribute bands I've seen tend to play quite accurately and I've been told this by many punters who've been to see many TB's. Hats off to the dedication.

I have been wanting to see these, if not just to see the "Stone Roses"

I had that when it came out and its quite good.
I'd also recommend the Black Crowes album with Jimmy Page. Its the best live Zeppelin album I've heard.
Kingdom Come's first album was a great Zeppelin album too :D

That was a great live album, pity there was no official video recordings of any of the shows as they would have been a darn sight better than the No Quarter: Unledded DVD. Page still cut the mustard in that but Plant's voice has been shot for a while and his range is nowhere near what it was in the 70's.

I thought Unledded was pretty fantastic... great drummer with the band, especially on Kashmir... I do rather like Najma Akhtar though! :)

Ah-ha! Battle of Evermore is available to download from her official site.

I saw Plant at the Sheffield Octagon a couple of years back and his voice was the same as thirty years ago.

Funnily enough I saw Plant being supported by Kindom Come which was quite ironic. Kingdom Come's first album is a complete rip off of Zeppelin and they claim they never listened to them - we believe you. Plant was on form that night but it was about the mid 80's.

Just thought - I did go and see a TB in the late 80's which were a Doors TB band. I went to see them because I never got to see The Doors live and I quite enjoyed them. I suppose this is the reason why people go and see TB's.
