Dons feel free to move this, I'm a total n00b when it comes to computers so Ive no idea where to put this :p

Well long story short, my hard drive crashed the other day, and Ive potentially lost all my files. Music, photos, words docs, you name it :(

Ive since found out it is possible to recover data, (at a price  ) so what I want to know is:

Has this happened to anyone before/how much did it cost to repair/what amount of data was recovered?

Ill know to always backup my files from now on  :p

I recovered my own :)

Happened to me once before - it is important to back up anything you can't afford to lose.

Yup gotta do that often!!

I don't care about the random crap that i've collected from the internet, but more importantly family and friends videos and photos!

Yeah it's happened to me twice before, my secondary hard drive has gone **** up, lost the partition information, the first time wasn't so bad i used Easy Recovery Professional and got about 80% back, but the second time wasnt so lucky i lost everything 100GB of data gutted completely, only now have i just got back to where i was before i lost it all.

I had a 120GB drive completely fail a few years ago and wasn't able to recover anything from it. Music, apps, games and downloads were replaceable but sadly I lost a lot photos that were not :(

Since then I have a dedicated backup drive and make backup of the backups on DVD :)

How would I go about doing that? Like I said, I'm a total n00b, Ive no idea where to go from here :p

I learnt my lesson in the first year at college doing an NC Computing. My Turbo Pascal program was on a single floppy disc and the thing got corrupted so I thought I was stuck. :o

Fortunately I had a few friends to help out that year and I'm glad I don't really have anything too important that I could afford to lose. ;)

Don't give up on it.

I had a big drive freak out on me last summer. It was the infamous Deskstar and started clicking like a mother****er. I sent it away to a recovery company who didn't actually get round to recovering anything. 6 months laster I asked them to return it to me and lo and behold it worked long enough for me to get my stuff off it. It obviously needed a rest or a holiday or something, so all may not be lost.

They had quoted around £250+ for the recovery, not including 30 dvds they needed to store the data.

Have you tried slaving the drive on another computer and pulling files off that way? We are able to do that at work sometimes.

Meh? Sorry that was just Russian to me :o :D

Ill have to get Mr Betty to help me with this one ;)

Think we've found something for about £100, which I'm willing to pay, just wanted to know if anyone else had a better option to try first :)

Put your hard drive in another computer as a secondary hard drive. If it works, than when you boot the computer the computer will see your hard drive as a second hard drive, for example the E: drive, and you might be able to pull files off of it onto your friends hard drive.

I would try my option first, it free and easy.

What he basically means is to take your faulty hard drive out of your machine and connect it to another machine. If your hard drive isn't completely faulty you should be able to access your data and copy over the important stuff you need :)

Do I need any special connectors or anything?

No most computers use a IDE cable (cable used to connect most hard drives to the motherboard) that allows you to connect two hard drives to the same cable. If the computer you put your hard drive in already has two than remove the secondary one, the one without the operating system (usually windows) on it, and plug yours in. The cable can only go one way, unless you force it, which wont be easy.

the only other one is the power which can ONLY go one way.

I have to go now, but anyone else on here should be able to help you if you have any more questions. I just dont wanna see you spend so much money without trying this first.
