Hi Guys,

Im in the middle of a health kick at the moment as Im going on holiday soon and thought I needed to lose some weight and tone up (so I can impulse shop :p)...

Anyway Ive been thinking about taking up archery (already doing badminton for fun) as I had the chance at Uni but never took it up and its something I really wanna try...

So Im wondering anyone on these forums do it, as I just want some advice how to get started - there must be local clubs to me that do something like this.

As I said Im at a loss, but it just looks like a lot of fun

Cheers

and tone up

Argh he said it, he said it.

If your looking to get fit archery isn't the best option to be honest mate though it is good fun.

Theres bound to be a few clubs around look in the phone book for a local shop and as for advice.

Depends what you want, Longbow or Compound bow, shoot targets or rubber animals in woods etc.

Either way its great fun :)

Naaah Im not looking to actually get some fitness out of it - its just a by-product of the extra energy Im getting going to the gym and stuff...

Would mean I get off this PC more often and breathe in some clean air. Its something Ive always thought looked so cool and wanted to do.

Cheers for the advice, Im sure Ill find a local club, but Ill post back as Im guessing its an expensive hobby to have - just looking for a begineers course to get me going - is there not some National Archery Association or something?

What kinda stuff do you do Marvt74 and whats the difference in those options you mentioned (I assume longbow is robin hood style and compound is what I would see on the Olympics)?

Cheers

hi,
yeah, best option is to get down to the local club if possible.
most have their own equipment for beginners so its a good start.
one thing i will say is..dont get disheartened if you cant even hit a barn door!
its a very rewarding feeling to start getting them arrows in the centre rings :)
good luck,
steve.
p.s: if you wanna buy equipment try: www.archeryworld.co.uk for a look see.
i had a lovely win&win recurve off them, god price aswell.

ooops almost forgot........
wear an arm guard please!!!
the people ive seen start this sport up thinking it wont hurt them, then seeing them get slapped by the string....oooh painful!

Used to do demos for the Mary Rose Trust and Tower Armouries (Leeds & London) with a 110lb Yew War Bow. The Tudors had no concept of arm guards you should have seen the bruises

God I enjoyed it, pity I tore my shoulder and can't shoot anymore.

ps3ud0 when you do join a club remeber you shoot or loose an arrow, never say fire because some officious geek will pick you up on it, normally with something like "...Oh have you got special arrows with gunpowder in them then?", unfortunately it's not legal to use these people for targets
