Well on a plasma a high definition feed doesnt look all that impressive. I have seen a pioneer 50" on euro 1080p hd Feed and a you would expect from as plasma its blurry and the colours are not vivid.

An lcd on the other hand looks incredible they just come alive, razor sharp image with brilliant colours. As far as I know and according to my dad who recently tested the latest lcd televisions on hd feed, the sony bravia 40" (KDLV40A12) had far superior picture quality than any other television, they have the best electronics at the moment. Its at least a generation ahead of any other tv.

On the other hand as soon as you watch standard definition picture lcd does not look all that great plasma is better for this. Also lcd does not have as good black levels as plasma but its improving all the time.

Your not wrong about the black levels, I have a Sony KDLV40A12U and I tried the THX optimizer that you get on some dvd's like Terminator 2 and I could not see half the shades of black it displays for you to calibrate the screen.

Your screen will probably be capable of displaying these varying shades of black, ranging from lighter grays down to video black. What is most likely is that your DVD player is not capable of displaying them accurately, i.e. it does not pass the PLUGE test. I can't remember what PLUGE stands for off the top of my head.

I have seen several of the same displays (sony bravia, panasonic PV500 and Pio XDE's) all with different DVD sources and running AVIA or DVE (a more detailed and comprehensive version of the THX Opt) the results are quite varied.

I have seen a 50' Pioneer with a £300.00 DVD that could not reproduce video black, yet the same screen with a £900 Denon DVD player could.

What a joke reply.

Plasma's look better on HD+SD. Nobody seriously argues this but if you must go ask the ISF guys for the readings and you will be surprised how much brighter, how much more contrast, better black levels, better white levels, better gamut plasmas have over LCD's Ohh and genius, Plasmas responce is less than 4ms the best lcd's claim 8 but are generally nearer 12-16. Plasmas dont blur, good ones dont judder and they dont FRC everything - something all lcd's do.

The electronics in the Sony are far behind the scalers in plasma's several years indeed. Incidentally the Sony isnt even the best LCD you can get (i assume you read it in what hifi ?)

Back to the post your budget is under 50" pricing so your looking at 40-43" screens. Best bet is to have a good long demo of several screens - make sure you see SD, ED + HD content as you need to see how it performs in all situations.

Agreed.

Plasmas are still a way ahead of LCD. Plasma's produce much better blacks and have a better contrast to them, as well as having a more natural looking image rather than the 'over processed' image that LCD's offer. I've had 2 LCD's and having not been pleased with with I've moved over to a Panasonic PX60 42" Plasma.

LCD's are catching up with plasma, but for the time being, a plasma offers a superior image.

As for Sony being leaders, that is not true. Sony don't even produce their own panels. They are in a joint partnership with another manufacturer (Samsung, I think).

Edit: Buy What LCD and Plasma (April Issue), theres a 4 page comparison between the 2 technologies and why they think plasma still rules the roost.

If I was only going to watch movies I would have bought a Plasme but as I wanted to use it as a second PC monitor and to play Xbox 360 I felt LCD was the better chioce.

For pure picture quality, as stated above.Plasma wins hands down.

The best mainstream 42-50" Plasma's are without a doubt Panasonic 42/50PV500's and Pioneer 436/536XDE's

The downside of plasma is they are not suitable for extended PC viewing due to image retention, saying that, my Pio 436 seems to survive 5 hour XBOX360 sessions without a problem.

Could be your DVD player. Different DVD players have different thresholds (so to speak) of the black levels they output.

You could be right, I am using a Sony RDR-HXD910 dvd recorder with upscaled hdmi output.
