7800GTX Sli or X1900 or 7900 ?

I've already got a 256Mb 7800GTX and am not too impressed with Oblivion performance ( ~20 fps outdoors ). it is almost flawless in everything else though.

A mate is selling his 7800 GTX cheap to get an X1900, so I have the option of going Sli for about £150,
question is would I be better of going Sli, or sell mine and get an X1900 ?

The other option is to sell mine and get a 7900GTX?

what do you reckon ?

please note: I only run at 1280x1024@75Hz - monitor limitation.

thanks

Go for the X1900 if you have to upgrade and if you can get a good price for your 7800. SLI will be faster but at that resolution, entirely unnecessary.

I would go SLI for £150 powerful and cheap.I doubt his x1900 will be faster than your sli setup with lashings of AA and AF ;)

I went from a 7800GTX SLI setup to a 1900 XTX and back to the old SLI rig

Was not impressed with the 1900 at all when running BF2 - the FPS was crap and it didn't seem to handle the eye-candy as well as the SLI setup.

+ I got this really weird interference in the background of the image (found out later this is due to the cat 6.3s) so I RMA'd it and got my money back.

So you should give the SLI setup a try, seeing as you're getting a bargain why not go for it? You can always try the 1900 later given the fact you're getting a bargain and you'll be able to sell your 7800s for a good price.

(and for the record I am not a nvidia fanboy :D )

Yep I agree sound like a plan to me.

Well considering he is not happy with the framerate in Oblivion, then I think sticking with his 7800gtx is not the answer. A single 1900xt will no doubt be better at 1280. Just look at the benches on the latest Firing Squad review where the ati cards come out on top. Of course a 7800gtx setup will beat that again, and considering the price you are being offered it for, I would go for it.

easyrider - why did you go from SLI to a single card solution ? Were you planning on going Xfire eventually as I can't see how anyone could expect a single card solution to compete with sli (at least until the g80 or r600 come out) Also, how was your performance crap with a 1900xt-x. The reviews certainly don't show this to be true. Of course it wouldn't be as good as an sli setup, but I thought this would have been obvious.

well he's said that the 7800GTX is flawless in everything else, even though that is a great price for it i don't see the point in paying £150 to get playable framerates in 1 game.

oblivion is a taxing game on the graphics card anyway, so maybe turn down afew settings or tweak the game

take a look at this

Well of course one xtx isn't going to beat two 7800gtx's :p if you compared xtx x-fire with the gtx sli then it may seem a more fair comparison but yea ...

I'd got for the sli option, as you would need a new mobo to go x-fire in the future so it would mean more outlay ;)

I never went from a SLI setup to a single card.

Well to be honest mate I got my hands on a HIS Excalibur 1900XTX for a nice price, and the plan was to sell the two 7800s (this was before the 7900 series was released so they were going for very nice prices at the time) thus leaving me with enough money left over at the end of the transactions to get a new soundcard and speakers.

I read on numerous occasions that ATI offer better IQ and AA than nvidia, that SLI @ 1280x1024 is simply overkill, and that a single-card solution is a more cost-effective option at this resolution, so I figured given these reasons I'd just give it a go without expecting a huge dip in performance :D

I only really play BF2 - it ran ok, not quite as smoothly as I hoped it would, it wasn't really much of an issue to be honest (certainly the SLI setup seemed to run it a wee bit better though)

But I got that weird background interference which warranted a swift RMA, it was subtle but very annoying - I've read on here that this was widely reported with the 6.3 Cats. Maybe I got a duff card, maybe I didn't who knows!

Id go SLI mate. Then if you do find you dont like it, youd probably get £350 for the 2 gtx cards, enough to get the x1900

EDIT : how did you find out what your framerates were? Id be interested to see what i was getting
