is this a good bases for a gaming rig? what else should i buy to finish it off?
 
I'd change to 2gb Ram and then this should still be within budget comfortably.

The motherboard will come with cables providing it is a new retail product and not a B Grade or Clearance item, in which case it may only come as the bare board. I think the 'silver stuff' you are referring to will be AS5(Arctic Silver 5) which is a CPU paste. If you buy a retail CPU then it will come with a thermal pad stuck on the bottom of the heatsink which will be fine unless you are going to be heavily overclocking.
 
Tis pretty good yes but i would recommend going dual core oppy like a 165 if you are building fron scratch, assuming you can stretch to it, it would cost approx £100 more over the 146 but would be more "future proof". If not then go for the 146
