Looks like I'm going to have to build a new pc for the parents as they've just decided they want to edit a shedload of video over the next few months. I don't think their current XP1700 will cut it though :p

Trying to keep the cost (excluding monitor, keyboard, mouse, dvdwriter) around £450, and thinking that the 805 overclocked will give them the best option. 1GB memory if we can get away with it, but might have to go to 2

Sound like the best option?

I would get a 945/955/975 chipset over the NF4 though

Everyone says that yet my 100% stable 3.7ghz 805 disagrees ;)

Also I was gonna spec the abit 955x board but it isnt in stock.

I chose this board as it has good voltage options and passive cooling.

ditch the turbocahce - the p4 needs bandwidth, you dont want it being stolen

The turbo cache model has 64 mb of onboard ram.enough memory for a editing gfx card.

Editing doesn't use much video memory so the turbo cache will be fine.

Its not like he will be playing games or anything.

Mine at 3.7 uses 147w compared to the 103w of my 3200+ @ 2.5 (1,55v)... 44w extra @ 8p kwh (higher than average) on 24/7 would cost roughly £31 per year extra to run and thats saying it is @ 100% load 24/7 compared to a single core athlon 64 that has been OCed.

Hardly horrific now, is it?

Its a big jump in percent terms but hardly worth considering still. Remember to turn off the light when you leave the room and you have your money back

thanks for the info guys - intersting link about Intel about to drop prices of dual cores on 4th June. Since parents aren't around for a few weeks I'll wait to see if this actually happens.

The running costs don't concern me much as it won't be used much, and I don't think they'll notice the additonal elec cost on their bill as much as they would an increase in purchase price. ;)

It was this bit that intersted me

A Better Bargain Coming In A Week

On June 4, Intel is going to slash prices on its dual core processors, not only Smithfields, but Preslers, too.

The price most worth of note is that for the Pentium D 940: $133, or just about the same as today's prices for the 805. That's a 3.2GHz, 65nm dual-core CPU.

If you must have a really cheap dual core processors, the 940 may give you a little more headroom and definitely fewer hassles from extreme heat than the 805 (though it's still a pretty hot processor). Not saying it's a match for the AMD X2s, for either performance or heat, but it will cost almost $200 less than the cheapest X2.

Yes, the 805s will also go down to a mere $93, but the price difference between it and a more advanced Presler chip will dwindle to just $40, and there is such a thing as being penny-wise and pound-foolish.
