DVD / DivX HD upscaling software?

I was going to have a play around with various bits of software to see what kind of results I can get out of upscaling DVD's and divx when played through a PC. This would then be hooked up to a HD LCD TV. I'm interested to hear people's recommendations on which software to use, and if there are any general settings and configurations which would be needed?

Agreed - ffdshow.

It can be a bit of a pig to set up, and I never quite got it right myself, but I still have it installed and will keep trying.
 
i didnt know there was a upscaling program for the pc! thanks for that.
does it make a lot of difference to the picture quality?
 
Personally I prefer just to use windows media player, no setup required and its light. FFDShow is much better than purevideo, it also works with all types of video.
 
think i might have a play around with it, since I could technically upscale a DVD to 1080 HD resolution as my monitor supports 1920 x 1200 resolution. So can you combine ffdshow with regular Windows Media Player, or better to use MPC? or does it not matter?
 
sorry to resurrect an old thread of mine, but wanted to ask something more now i have my HTPC set up.

I've got ffdshow configured to double the resolution and adds some sharpening and anti noise filters for DVD's. It does look much better and for DVD's i'm happy with it for now. Using it through Media Player Classic as although i tried ZoomPlayer, i found it a pain.

Anyway, if i use FFDshow with DivX/XVid to upscale the resolution it works and you can tell it's sharper, but it does add some distortion to the image around the edges of people etc where it goes a bit blocky. I assume this is to do with the compressed source somehow and i need some kind of post processing?

anyway, does anyone know how to improve divx/xvid image quality once upscaled?

It's caused by the compression. You need to add de-noising.

In the blur & nr section enable de-noise set all the options to 5 and enable hq.

I also have postprocessing set to max with luma corrections, picture properties setup to increase colour saturation, and deinterlacing to double the framerate and make the video a lot smoother.

sorry to once again bring this topic back up but im currently trying to get ffdshow configured with my theartertek. Now i have got ffdshow working properly with media player classic, but whenever i come to upscale a dvd. the Nvidia purecodec drivers always kick in and upscale.

I have set raw video to all supported and enabled this in theatertek but to no avail if anyone has any ideas greatly appreciated.

Also when i move over to my toshiba 32WL66 it decides to turn off if i have video mode set into overlay, ie pictures do not display but everything else ie taskbar window bar etc are all still there.

If anyone could help me out it would be greatly appreciated.
