Nero's borked - Recommend me new burning software

As thread title, nero won't add or burn discs at all, I've tried their new trial version on their site and the same thing happens.

I need to back up a few DVD's, recommend me some good (free) DVD burning software.

Nero. :p Have you tried uninstalling, rebooting and reinstalling? A few years ago I would have sworn with using Easy CD Creator, and avoid Nero. But recently Roxio has been pants, and Nero has improved.
 
I've heard that many horror stories about versions 6 and 7 of Nero that I stick with version 5.5.10.28. Its served me well for a long time with no problems.
Its as though theres time error problem built into versions 6 and 7 where they suddenly stop working.
 
uninstall nero, then use their cleanup tools, this'll remove all settings and reg entires for nero..

then reinstall using the newest version of either 5, 6 or 7 from their website (using your correct key of course)

Nero 7 is very good, wish they made seperate packs for all the extra junk they add tho, like the media player etc.. (like they did with 6)

in the newest nero 7 installers they've got easy option to remove that stupid nero scout thing at the end of the installer, instead of having to unregister the dll

cdburnerxp is okay too, if you're a casual burner. also deepburner do a standalone burner (no installation) which is handy and imgburn is the best cd- image burner :)

Agreed. I much prefer the 5.5.xx.xx Version. I've found it hard to use your own boot image with 6. Maybe I'm just not used to how its works but, I think I'll just stick with 5 plus I find the Startsmart thing stupid although that could be got around.
 
I have 6.6.***** and it works fine. No startsmart so I must have turned it off. My dad's computer has it though, and it's a pain in the ***
 
Thanks for all the replys guys, V7 just broke on me out of the blue, which is just plain wierd.

Had V6 lying around and It's working like a treat!

CDburnerXP I really disliked along with burn4free. It messed up a dvd I tried burning :confused:

This is probably more myth than fact, but I recently became aware of the infamous "StarForce" protection being used by some games. It supposedly takes an active dislike to certain versions of Nero. If StarForce is installed, you'll see it listed under "Non p'n'p drivers" in Device Manager if you tick show hidden devices. Worth checking?
