I admit it, i used to always use a copied version of windows xp!

Thats probabally why my other computer used to always !error! you say.

So when i bought my new rig i decided to get a propper version of it so i could recieve windows updates etc.

Now here is my problem...

...i just installed all the updates that are available, my first problem was that it would blue screen me and say STOP: C000021a {fatal system error} The Session Manager Initialization process terminated unexpectedly.

Doing a Google search found this was due to one of the updates, so i had to repair windows and start again.

5pm tonight - get in from work, run windows update however decide to remove the buggy update that caused my 1st problem, and installed everything else.

Rebooted.

PROBLEM!!! cant open anything without performing an illegal operation, so run system restore and here i am posting my problem!

Now has anyone else found this problem or anyone have any help for me, would be much appreciated :)

It's highly rare for a Windows Update to cause a serious problem like this. Chances are it is conflicting with some other software on your system. Usually the culprits are anti-virus/security software.

I'd suggest you launch MSConfig and remove all programs from startup. Reboot and check if you get any errors. Sounds like it could be a particular program that might be causing the probs?

That site is fantastic i have been using it for nearly a year insted of windows update. Basicaly someone has writen a page exactaly the same as windows update but it works in firefox and opera (with the help of a small plugin) if you read up on there site it tells you that they are able to do so because all of the updates are available from the MS knowlage base. And all the plugin does is search for the patches you dont have and then pulls them from the correct artical and downloards and installs them for you.

Right... Why not just enable Automatic Updates if you insist on using Firefox/Opera? It seems a bit insecure going to some guys site and hoping none of his patches are infected with malware.

Why use WindizUpdate?

Not only will it keep you up to date with the latest updates from Microsoft, it will also keep software and drivers from other vendors updated. However, that functionality is currently missing.

Good reasons to use WindizUpdate

  • No personally identifiable information is collected from your computer.
  • No more unwanted spyware -- Microsoft Internet Explorer can finally be removed from your computer (if that were possible).
  • It lists just the updates you need. If an update has been superceded by a newer one, it will not ask you to install the older one.
  • Using enhanced data from MBSA, WindizUpdate will find more security patches needed for your O/S than the "other" website.
  • If there is a security issue with a component that you have not got installed, it will not ask you to update it. For example, if you have not installed hyperterminal, it will not update it.
  • It is not restricted to just Microsoft products. Software from other vendors can also be updated.
  • Upgrading to the latest version of Internet Explorer is not considered a Critical Update!
  • Works on Windows versions no longer supported by Microsoft -- Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 95
  • Our plugin is not an ActiveX control.
  • Integrated download manager with error detection -- you can cancel downloads at any time, and the next time you wish to install the cancelled update, it will continue from where it left off. Only corrupted sections of the file are redownloaded.
If you are still not convinced that WindizUpdate is the site for you, please check out our page titled "do we need to say any more?

Disadvantages

  • There is a delay from when new updates are released from Microsoft to when they appear on this site.
  • If you're using Internet Explorer, you will need to use Microsoft's Windows Update site for updates -- this site will be of no use to you.
  • You'll need to upgrade your browser if you're using MSIE 4.xx -- This site won't work, neither will Microsoft's.

I have been using WindizUpdate for a number of months now without a hitch. There was only one reason I still had a shortcut to Internet Explorer on my machine and that was to get windows updates; now I have no need :)

You still need to manually go to windows update if you want to get non-critical software updates and drivers. Automatic Updates only handles critical patches.

thanks for thew replies, however after installing nothing works what so ever, everything performs an illegal operation....

surely this is a glitch in the updates?!

do u think its worth ringing microsoft to complain?

cheers

You installing winxp with SP2 intergrated? Only ever had that stop error when installing xp using makers restore disks with SP1 then upgrading to SP2,then updating.

If that genuinely gives you pleasure, I'm going to run away.

And using this site is going to help the OP in what way? The updates are the same. Also if I was you I would use MS for updates, if you do use Firefox and do not want to use IE - turn automatic updates on as already stated.

With regards to your problem, I am not sure what is causing this - I have just re-built a rig installing all possible updates and have had not errors at all. I would assume the cause of the problem is going to be coming from either drivers or software.

My advice would be to re-install, install all updates, drivers and software... Make sure you reboot after each driver/software install so you can find out what is causing the problem.

Hope this helps.

Giving me pleasure? What are you talking about? And if you run away, you're going to come back to read this reply anyway (and get on with life in general) so there's not much point at all in writing that.

Sorry but that doesnt resemble a software error what so ever, check you build it appears that your memory may be at fault

STOP: C000021a {fatal system error} The Session Manager Initialization process terminated unexpectedly.

This is a very general error also unless your looking for someone to blame. This error beings back hundreds of results, strangly enough nearly all dont relate to Windows Update.

Out of interest, what is the hardware in your setup? Is it overclocked? Overvolted?

I thought it may be down to hardware fault, but I am not experience with these errors. :o

hmm wierd, yeah i have overclocked to 2.8ghz with fsb @ 400

everything is running fine, i have fixed the blue screen fault, just cant install the updates without them giving m errors like - steam.exe does not have permission to use this win32 application etc.

when i can be bothered just going to reinstall xp :)
