Sony is to release a wireless-enabled, handheld device aimed at young people who use instant messaging (IM).
The pocked-sized gadget, called the mylo, will sell for about $350 (£183), according to the Associated Press.

It has a small display and keyboard and is pitched at the young, mainstream market who use IM and are interested in making net telephone calls.

I wish they made this as part of the PSP. or created an add on that provided this functionality.

It actually looks a bit like a PSP too tbh. It just seems like an odd release to me.

So it basically does SMS chat?

For 180 quid?

Good grief.

From the article it seems to have PDA/phone functionality.

They'd have been better off releasing a keyboard and a firmware update for the PSP in my opinion.

Without Bluetooth or any kind of phone functionality, it's a bit bobbins.

From the replies so far you can see why its not available here.

Deep down im sure they want one but it is the trend lately to bash Sony....and any sony products...
Im suprised people havent accuse them of copying/stealing the idea or offering an alternative... :p

I like the idea i had of a small cheap gadget for text messaging over its own powered wireless network, each connects to its closest neighbours and they to others and each passes info through the network for free communication!

So is that how this works then?

Something like msn messenger on all new phones would be cool, that way you know when someone's online and can message any of them anytime all for a cheap monthly fee!

I think you'll find people don't want it as it's rubbish. There's not enough free wifi hot spots in this country to justify paying £180+ for something that most peoples phones can already do

My god think of the routing tables those things would need. Yikes. Back to the drawing board for you I think.

Aint there a thing called a Blackberry whcih is big in America what does all of the mylo stuff?

Yeah but no but Blackberry is for business minded people and this is aimed at a younger / hip generation / geek though. Compare the price to a blackberry too.

Deep down I don't. If I was given one for free, I wouldn't throw it away or anything. But I wouldn't spend money on one. For a 2006 gadget, it's disapointing, especially from the likes of Sony.

Most people these days, either has one or more of the following:

Mobile Phone w/camera and video
PDA/Pocket PC
Smartphone
MP3 Player
Digital camera

That big thunky PSP thing just covers a handful of them. The PSP will be a success because it's a damn good mobile games console. But as a general functionality device, I don't think so.

I don't know exactly how the tech would work but wouldn't it just need to know which neighbour to pass the packet to along its path?
