Eyewear me a £500 upgrade

Current system:

XP-M 2500 @ 2.2ghz
MSI K7N2 Delta 2 Platinum
1.5gb Generic Ram
ATI 9800 Pro 128mb
Samsung 200gb HDD
Enermax 350w PSU

It's mainly used as an all rounder, but I do like to game too. Obviously I have been playing most things at low resolutions with this rig, so it's about time I did a major upgrade.

I'm a bit out of the loop, but I'm going to be going with Conroe/Allendale, feels a bit strange going back to Intel after being an AMD man since the original Slot-A Athlon

Case, monitor, keyboard etc. not needed, just the gubbins above (I assume I'll need a new PSU?)

£500 budget, £600 at a stretch, spec me please :D

Gaming wise that rig will blow you away compared to what you have. Only thing i didnt change was the hard drive as trying to keep it under budget.

Noob spec alert, noob spec alert!! :p (sure someone else can correct my mishaps)

I didn't spec a cooler as I don't know about that and if you were gonna stretch the budget I'd suggest an X1900 GT or X1800 XT :D

Edit: Kinda like that spec above  :p

Good point, i totally missed out the cooler. If you are going to be overclocking (a crime not to with these specs ;)) HS-003-SY Scythe Ninja Plus Heatpipe CPU Cooler (Socket 478, 754, 939, 940, LGA755) (HS-003-SY)
£31.95+ vat is the best choice, if that takes you too far over budget and you dont plan to OC to the max then perhaps the cheaper zalman or arctic coolers would do you.

I'd definately use that spec but buy a X1800XT. Well worth the extra money.

Lots of useful articles for that question linked to in the FAQ thingy Ulf made:

From what I've read conclusion amounts to X1800 XT is faster than the X1900 GT in pretty much all games (except Oblivion) but the X1900 GT might well turn out to be faster with the extra shader power. If it was me I'd go for the HIS X1900 GT ICEQ 3 as I love the cooler and the performance hit between the two doesn't bother me :D
