 Even the upgrades are a rip-off

The way i am lookin at it i pay £20 a month for my moblie contract to use me mobile phone.

So its bascially £20 a month for the first year to use vista (pc) then it doesnt cost you anything for the next 5-10 years until MS bring out the next one.

Agreed it is a different story when u have to pay in a lump sum

To be honest, it surprises me how people get upset at paying xxx for an os. A game costs you £20-30 and may last you 20 hours... I've had windows xp since release so thats almost 5 years isn't it? For the time it lasts its not a big investment in my opinion.

It's a lot of money when you consider that all it is is a CD with something copied on it. I'll be waiting a few months for the prices to come down and also for any launch problems to resolve themselves.

I think it would be more prudent to wait a few months - as a I did with XP - and then migrate entirely. I'll probably build a system from scratch with Vista too.

What I keep thinking is that I currently use a laptop and two machines. It would cost me a fortune to have them all running Vista!

Yes but then so is a £20 game that will last you 10 hours. Its all relative to use in my opinion.

I still think that the spending of say £250 for the retail version of an os that would last for maybe 5 years is nothing, costs £50 a year and its the most used component on your computer.

wow bit steep them prices, heres hoping my Uni forgets to remove me from the MS academic Alliance in December so I can get it for free ;)

You have to realise that you not really just paying for a plastic disk in a bit of packing but, your paying for thousands of hours of programmers wages for writing and testing the software.

Although, I personally think that maybe if microsoft didn't give millions of dollars to third world countries then we might actually get a more sensible price on their products.

As for the prices, don't expect the US price to equate to us at the normal exchange rate. We nearly always pay more than them abroad for our software.

It's still a hell of a lot of money. I do completely understand that it costs MS a lot to make and maintain Windows, but you also have to remember that MS will be selling millions of copies of Vista. The price is still steep.

Won't be bothering with Vista for at least a year after its release anyway, seems pretty stupid to be one of the first-adopters because it isn't likely to be a smooth experience.

yes, I have to agree that the development costs could be based on selling a more sensible quantity.

I bought XP right at the launch and didn't have any problems until SP2.

Maybe we should run a sweepstake (or virtual one) on the launch date of the first service pack or patch for Vista.

Don't forget that OEM prices will be less, XP Pro retail is nearly £250

However the OEM license you buy (if MS decide to release an OEM version of the flavour of Vista you want) is only good for the first computer/motherboard you install it on.
Upgrade your motherboard and you're looking at forking out for the OS again.

Buy retail upgrade and you can transfer the license indefinitely.

It'd be nice if for that price, we were allowed to install the OS on more than one PC (or a PC and a laptop, like the license for MS Office allows). I can afford to upgrade my main PC, but not that and my laptop.

I don't mind paying the money for Vista. I'm still not decided which of the editions I'll be getting (likely either Home Premium, 'cos that'll be enough, or Ultimate just because it'll have all the toys). In my view, for the use I get out of it at home, the cost is justified. It's 5 years since I bought my XP upgrade for about £80 so I feel I've had excellent value for money out of it. If Vista lasts as long, it obviously won't be quite such good value for money, but at £40 a year (assuming £200 for the upgrade, and 5 year lifespan) I can't complain. I pay almost that much per year to keep my anti-virus up-to-date.

Unless the motherboard dies, then you are allowed to transfer the licence, or so some people on here seem to say. Soldering irons at the ready! :D

The prices they set is not looking good! By putting in more version of Vista is just another excuse to bump the price.

I'm curious to know how it will effect the price of new computers in shops and which version of Vista it will be pre-installed - that make selling/buying computer even more complicated, this may puts some people off!

Apple sells Tiger OS with everything in it costs only £89! 'Family pack' cost £139 which allows you to install up to 5 mac!

EDIT: Oh, you will also have to fork out more for tegabyte of rams and power-hungry graphic card just to cope with basic version of Vista, let alone the premium!
