well i suppose as you can guess from the title my Hiper Type R 580W has expired, not shure if it took out anything else as i dont have another psu powerfull enough.
I tryed a 250w psu just to see if it turns on an it does so i am hopefull it was just the psu and nothing else.

any recomendations as to what to do about a replacement as i personaly dont want another but cannot afford a different PSU.

Crap. I hate these kinds of posts, my Hiper has just gone AWOL and I am mighty miffed. Happened in the last 20 mins, think its F@H related, nevertheless, its gone pear.

Enermax, Seasonic, FSP, Tagen, OCZ... any will be fine :)
was looking at the FSP Sparkle 500w, as i have just put a FSP Sparkle 400w in my mums pc and it is motering along nicely(Asrock 939-Dual Sata 2, 3700+SD, HIS X1600XT IceQ).

EDIT: i was just wondering if damage caused to other components by a PSU failure is coverd in anyway?

Sorry - is their supposed to be something wrong with the Hiper PSU's?
I have a couple of machines with 580w modular PSU's and they are sweet - excellent voltages, stable and silent.

Yeah, an above average number of them die, and when they do most of them destroy system components which proper psus never do, and they don't supply anywhere near 580w, amongst other things.

These are the known good trusted psu manufacturers:
-Tagan, OCZ, Seasonic, Antec, Enermax, FSP.

This is getting me kinda worried. Does it only apply to the modular version? I have the non-modular Type-R 580w and I've had no problems with mine and I've been gaming quite a bit with an X1900XT attached to it. Are there any signs of imminent failure or does it just go out suddenly?

Hiper Type R 580w modular was the flavour of the month a while ago... every one was recommending them...
