Is PC Gaming dying out in certain genres

Looking around at all the benchmarks for PC GAMES I see that the most often used are Farcry (2 years old) and FEAR (1 year old) and BF2 (18 months old) and I then started thinking that BF2 aside (best online FPS game ever) which has a huge following that FPS games on the PC are just no where seemingly or was it always the case that the PC never actually had that many FPS releases in the first place?

I know that MMORPH games like WOW and Never winternights etc have huge followings and people play them for years but what about the single player guy who needs constant releases to keep himself occupied as they only take around 1 week to 2 months to play.

Just cannnot help thinking that all sorts of game genres are disappearing from the PC, such as space combat sims and racing games etc. OK the SIMS get a lot of releases as do football games but is that where PC GAMES are heading now.

Look at the market, Consoles have taken off since the xbox360,wii and ps3 paying £300 for a decent system brings the casual gamers in.

I love pc stuff but I can see it becoming less and less apart from the tech demo type games.

But I know what you mean, their is not much innovation anymore just the usual fps, rpg, mmorpg.

I think the PC market is getting saturated with a lot of sequals, EA anyone  but I cant see the PC market ever dying out, I guess it will shift more towards mmorpgs and other pay to play games, where those that prefer the singles player style would find themselves better off on a console.

People tend to stay hooked on the sequels but if you just look around and do some research you can find some crackers that have fallen off of peoples radars that arent necessarily FPS MMPORG or RPG and all that, you just have to look, but yeah there is definitley less demand for the non standard PC games nowadays. :)

Yeah the pc market is a bit stale its hard for a company now to try something new due to time and costs, you should keep an eye on the indie game scene some cool little games with new ideas are always popping up.

Hopefully with Vista it should reinvigorate all genre's on the PC. With that Xbox360 wireless thingy and Live Anywhere, people will be able to at least use xbox controllers on a PC.

I think FPS games are still going relatively strong on the PC far cry, fear, BF2 and half life 2 are all great games released over the last couple of years. Coming up with have HL2 episode 2 plus all the extras that come with that, BF2142, Crysis and Quake wars. That’s a fairly strong line up. I do agree that outside of RPG, FPS and RTS their really isn’t too much going on on the PC anymore. Many of the classis genres seem to have died out (space sims, anything turn based, point and click adventure) and most other games simple work better on consoles (sports, third person action, racing). The consoles also seem to be getting most of the innovation now too (see singstar, guitar heroes and the wii for good examples). It’s a bit unfortunate but I really can’t see this changing any time soon.

IF they release a keyboard and mouse for the Xbox 360 Id move to Consoles in a heartbeat.

Especially with the latest news with Vista.

First of all, you can't read too much into what games are used for benchmarking. They tend to use specific engines that are well established in the industry and are longstanding so that they can be used for comparative purposes. For example Quake3 was used for a good 4 years or so, but that didn't mean that no new FPS were being released - in fact, many were using the same engine. IF you think about it, there isn't much point reviewers running 6 different benchmarks all using variants of the same engine.

The FPS genre definitely isn't dying out in my view, when I read the title I expected to see you thinking more along the lines of point'n'clickers, platform games etc. Just look at all the FPS that have come out over the last ~year ... SiN Episodes, HL2:EP1, Prey, CoD2, Quake 4, Serious Sam 2, FEAR etc

Racing games are another genre I'm suprised to see mentioned, I mean again we've had rFactor, GTR, GTL, LFS, CMR5, NFS:MW, GTI Racing, FO2 and countless others I've forgotten.

In fact the two main genres of games I tend to play these days (due to wanting shallow pick-up-and-play experiences) are FPS and arcade racers.

Space combat sims is a fair comment as they seemed to have died off somewhat this decade.

FEAR is old now (well it seems to be once you have played it), HL2:EP1 was to short to be called a proper game, Colin McRae 5 is now on the best sellers list and hence ancient.

Must be me and my rose tinted specs I guess.

If we could choose between only playing games on a PC for the rest of our life or a console, I think most of us here would choose a PC.
PC's seem to still scare a lot of people with some never even thinking PC and game could be used in the same sentance.

I think a lot of it has to do with the way you were brought up, kinda what you had for xmas as a kid, you then tend to stick with what you know. Always had a console for games then you prolly have a 360 now.
Sure you might have a PC too but most likely use it for other things a lot more than gaming.
I wish more people would embrace what kind of experiance you can have via PC gaming + Team Speak + any decent online game, but as the xbox's and the ps3's get more PC esque in the way they do things maybe the PC gaming market will slowly...very slowly drop off but never die of course.

Well, if you are looking at such a short timespan where games ~1 year old are considered ancient?, tell me when things where better?

IMO things noticeably picked up in the FPS genre from 2004 onwards, we've had loads of AAA titles since then compared with not a lot from the preceeding couple of years.

You also need to remember that a lot of publishers are targetting pre-christmas for their releases and hence by September time it may seem like we are entering a barren spell. It might be better to judge the state of things in a couple of months time.

This thread comes up every month / couple of months.

Its not really dying in any sense, the bigger publishers may all be going solely for the awsome graphics rubbish sequel cash ins, but there are some great houses making great games.

Company of Heroes is the latest AAA class game released, and truely is that. To me its what I have wanted in a strategy game ever since I first played AoE. Where the genre goes from here I do not know, but its great.

PC gaming wont just die, its bigger than it ever has been.

The way i look at it is:

-Want single player = Console

-Want online = PC

I prefer online, therefore a PC is the toy for me. Personally i wouldnt say its dying, but its certainly nto as active as it used to be, although most of the top titles go on for years, BF2, CSS and WOW being a few examples, whereas console games dont last nearly as long in the most cases.

I think that’s part of the online element, primarily single player games are only going to last so long, just look at the 360, it seems every second week everyone is rushing to get the latest hot game, dead rising, saints row, TDU, Lego star wars all come to mind are recent examples. I don't think anybody will argue than any of these are great titles, just the best new thing. On the PC on the other hand people pick a game they really love then stick with it, form clans/guilds, discuss the strategies, play the mods, watch the "pros", compete in competitions etc.

single player games don't interest me long enough for me to buy a consol, if I'm meeting up with m8s then we'll go out rather than stay in!

I hate EA and i hate sequel trend thats happening. What i also dont like is the release of games that are clearly either unfinished or rushed due to fat cats wanting the money now. Perfect example of this was Oblivion, could have been around 100x better, but dumbed down for the 360 and is really buggy.

Games only become old when you complete them 10 times and have mold on the case. I have halo 1 in my drive for the last 3 weeks, love that game. Graphics arnt amazing but all the key elements are there for a great game.

Single player games = PC
Multiplayer/Online = PC

There is no contest.

What makes me laugh is the people scared about consoles, why?

We have had physics in games since 2003/4? PS2 doesnt have it, Xbox doesnt, but wait 2 years later and the Xbox 360/PS3 and Wii have it, so whats next to compare, havok 3/4 engine? DX10? No console on this planet will ever stop the PC, you can change a PC on demand, you cant a console. When you buy a console its already out of date, you buy a pc and its never out of date.

ok, gonna have to fix this tbh,
you buy a PC and it never HAS to be out of date.
however, I've a 486 in my office that I bought and I'm quite shure its out of date.
