Compared to this quad opteron (dual dual core) a few numbers down

The opty has a better Measured integer speed, but the pentium whips it in Measured floating point speed.

Good to see a real world test although I do feel the number of variables could also play a part in the differences.

Hmmm... Quad core... Mac Rumours have posted that the 8core (Dual QuadCore) Macpro may be available as soon as late November... As soon as it hits the shops ill be getting one... nice to see the intel chips are a nice step up from my Current setup

I really don't see how anyone could use 8 cores on a home computer. Yes there is folding and other DC projects, but I mean in general.

I have an X2 and find that dual core is excellent as I tend to run a lot of applications, but to be honest I doubt many people could push quad core, let alone dual quad core!

Not sure if your right but, I know when running Adobe PSCS2, Aperture, Itunes and a few Firefox windows I can be doing intensive batch processing in Aperture and the machine still flies along nicely, this could be helped by the fact its running OSX and having 4gb Ram in there... Under Windows its just the same though, and then its only using 2gb of the ram, at the end of the day you can never have too much speed and power...

All the unused cycles go towards folding, so at least im making good use of it.
