WiiMote to control PC games...

Because Nintendo are behind it now. So rather than a small company releasing a peripheral that's dependent on software companies showing support for it (when most won't, as they can make far more sales catering to the majority who already use a perfectly workable mouse/keyboard combo), we now have a big company dedicating an entire console to it, complete with large-scale marketing and proven quality games.

Plus, to be fair, the Wii is a revolution for consoles, but not so much for PCs. The PC doesn't really need a remote-type control, because the mouse/keyboard combo already works so well for the multiple tasks that it requires. Whereas the Wii remote is pretty much Nintendo's attempt at combining a mouse with an ordinary console controller, to allow you far better flexibility in games.

How does the wiimote reciever connect to a PC? Is it usb?

The wiimote connects to the console via bluetooth, so its easily possible to get it to work with a pc, the real trick will be implementing the sensor bar.

The sensor bar is nothing more than 2-4 IR LEDS that flash on and off, the front of the wiimote has as sensor (i.e a mini camera in the front) Most digital cameras pick up IR light. Try pointing and using a tv remote at a camera an the camera picks up the IR as white light. The wiimote uses a combination of this sensor and the gyro sensors to detect where the wiimote is directed and wheres its being moved to.

The hard part will be converting the signal the wii remote sends about the sensor bar to information that can be translated into mouse movements, but very do able.

Well thought I would bring this back up, it appears as if they have now got the sensor bar working,

See link for more information and video :D

A possible alternative for a mouse? Just a little more work and an installation file and I think even I will go out and get a wii remote.

Oh imagine a PC Wii emulator with wiimote compatiblity in windows

If thats the case how does that stop other people in different houses playing with theres interfearing with your console??
Don't know much about the Wii so I'm curious

The controller talks to the console via bluetooth, but like bluetooth you sort of have to register the contoller with the console. I would imagine that each controller has a uniqueID number such as a mac address on a network card.

Ah I didnt know that. Pretty cool.

Anyone remember the gyroscopic Microsoft gamepad? I remember I used to play Motocross Madness and that supported it for tilting the bike. I never had one though as I thought it was a bit pointless. :o

That would be great for FPS games. Quake with a wiimote, sounds interesting.

It wouldn't work - you heard the guy. A mouse does not tell you where to point - it detects movement. Where as the wiiMote detects where you are pointing. On a FPS on the PC the cross hair stays in the centre of the screen at all times. Whereas the cross hair on the wii FPS's has to travel to the edge of the screen to enable turning.

Using a WiiMote on a PC would mean that you would end up pointing away from the screen and then have to recenter your arm into the range of the bar. that would then mean you you be back where you started.

You would have to modify the game so that the cross hair moves on the screen. That means custom modifications to off the shelf games or bespoke games. Either way it would no where near be as good as a Mouse.

no one's mentioned an rts game though, cant think of a more suitable device to use for commanding armies really, looks promising really, also mouse controlled flight sims such as freelancer could be useable aswell

The reticule can stay fixed to the centre of the screen (As it does in COD3 for Wii when you turn active aiming off or some such option). It basically means that your guy continues turning when the wiimote is pointing at a certain extreme angle.
However, like you said, it would still require a modification to the game for it to work on a PC game.

I don't see this as a big deal personally... mouse and keyboard gives you much greater speed and precision than the wiimote can, so any game enabled to use it would have to be completely redesigned and its difficulty levels rebalanced to allow the wiimote's use. Don't get me wrong, I think it's a great little controller, but a game needs to be built around it - you can't just offer a wiimote as an alternative input method for a game designed for either a pad or a mouse/kb.

a boxing game, now that would be the one to play with the wii remote lol

would probably end up punching the monitor

Also

i wonder how many wii controllers are goign to get thrown at the wall or tv, by mistake when the users are trying to throw a grenade

"incoming"

Smash

"sorry mum, we need a new TV"
