Hello, just a quick query, it seems that OCuk have a fantastic offer

Linkage to 8800GTS offer

BFG GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail

For £254.99

£299.61 inc VAT

I'm really interested in this its just I'm alittle unsure of my PSU capabilities (Hiper HPU-4K580-MK Type R 580W Modular ATX2.2 PSU - Black UV). Yes my Wattage is fine 580-630w MAX but BFG states that

"A 400W PCI Express-compliant system power supply with a combined 12V current rating of 26A or more"

Ive checked the Hiper manual and its got a few readouts,

+5V (± 5%) 2.0A - 36A
+12V 1 (± 5%) 1.0A - 20A
+12V 2 (± 5%) 1.0A - 18A
-12V (± 10%) 0A - 0.8A
+5VSB (± 5%) 0 - 2.5A
+3.3V (± 5%) 0.5 - 30A

Can anyone shed some light on this one? Has anyone used this PSU with an 8800 GTS? The last thing I need is a £300 graphics card refuse to work becuase my PSU isnt upto the job.

You have two 12v rails

+12V 1 (± 5%) 1.0A - 20A
+12V 2 (± 5%) 1.0A - 18A

So you have a combined current of 38A

The spec isnt saying the graphics card needs 26A on its own on a single rail its just saying if you total over 26A for your whole system you should be ok. In short your almost certainly fine I cant see the card using anywhere near 18A.

That PSU does 30A (see here)...
+12V1 & +12V2 = <360W
Divide that by 12 = 30A :( Same as my 400W Enermax PSU

But should be fine for a 8800GTS :) Only thing is, Hiper's have not been reliable lately :(

Ok didnt realise It worked like that Ive always used single rail supplys, its still enough to run the graphics card though so it doesnt really matter.

You must be mad to even consider trusting an 8800 series with a Hiper. They are rubbish. Mine, like so many others on here recently, blew up after around 15 months of use. Mine, unfortunately, took out a brand new motherboard at the same time. Yet another Hiper was reported on here as failed just yesterday. There have been dozens of failures just on this forum alone over the past couple of months. That has to be one of the worst failure rates for a component ever (aside from maybe the 7900 series cards). You may say that yours is running ok with no problems but that can be said of all of us whose Hipers failed. Mine for instance, went with no warning. You would be far better off investing in a good psu from a reputable manufacturer.

Hiper's by the way, cannot reach their max quoted wattage and are extremely innefficient. A couple of magazines ran psu group tests and found out just how bad they are. Have a read of this .

It seems its hit or miss, but invest in yet another PSU and shell out even more £££'s (possibly £70+) I'm not so sure. I see what your saying it could potentialy save me £££'s if it explodes and takes out mobo + 8800 for example. I bought the Hiper before I discovered these forums and only relied on reviews. How many Hipers have been sold? how many have gone pear shaped and taken out other components? Ratio?

P.s thanks for answering the Amperage question, now its wether I'm going to trust it. :(

Looks like I'm shafted then, I've got a Hiper and a 7900 GT. ;) No problems with either so far. :)

These figures may be of help, taken with a watt meter on my rig* - draw is a lot less than I expected. Stock clocks.

Idle at first power on: 245w
Idle at desktop: 221w
Core 0 and 8800 running rthdribl.exe (16x AA / 1280x960): 302w
Core 0 and 8800 running rthdribl.exe + core 1 processing xvid: 320w

So in theory (rails permitting), a measly 350w supply could handle the card - would probably pop after a few months strain though, lol.

I had a hiper type R modular it went with a flash after 8 months, I returned it to OCUK and they gave me a new one, when my mum took it in for me apparently it caused a commotion and shorted some computers out in the building.. anyway, I wouldn't risk anything with a hiper tbh, oh and another kick in the teeth i didn't get another year with the new PSU the warranty carried on and is now run out 1 year..

That's what i always said about mine when other people were slagging them off on here. Then mine went and blew up as well and took a brand new £120 motherboard with it. I suddenly was not sticking up for them anymore. It gets bloody expensive (£315 including the original motherboard, it's replacement and a good psu) when a psu takes out other components with them and you have to replace the lot. Especially as you have no comeback against the manufacturer. Mine was around 15 months old which is around the time frame that others have been failing on here. You simply cannot ignore the abnormally large number of Hipers that have failed on this forum alone.

You also might want to have a read of the review i posted further up the page, especially the last couple of paragraphs.
