"Ever wonder why Microsoft hasn't released an HDMI cable for the Xbox 360, or whether the AV port was really capable of digital out? Well, here's your answer: we landed pictures of what appears to be the second Xbox 360 -- the Xbox 360 v2, if you will -- codenamed Zephyr. (The original Xbox 360, if you recall, was codenamed Xenon.) The long rumored about and awaited update to the console won't just feature a new, cooler 65nm processor, it's also finally added an HDMI port for full digital 1080p pleasure, as well as a 120GB drive, just what the doctor ordered. The 120GB drive may or may not come bundled with the kit, we don't yet know, just as we also don't yet know how much a Zephyr 360 is going to run (we imagine it'll go for the same price as currently so they can keep up a little on their expanding margin). But our very kind Xbox insider seemed happy to let us know we'd be able to get them "soon.""

any idea when this is getting released?
would be nice go have hdmi and a bigger hard drive, the heat thing has never bothered me though!

Slightly annoying, aesthetical changes or CPU revisions are fine, but not added features or increased benefits.

Unless they plan to have 3 revisions of the console out and sell this for more than the current Premium? :p

Those air holes look bigger too, or I could just be imagining it.

Bring It On!!

I've been waiting for this sucker for ages and it sounds like it's coming soon.

Imagine a quiet 360 with built in WiFi..

looks good, I bet we will be able to buy the 120gb HD and put it in the current console no problems, not worth changing it as I dont have a monitor or screen thats hdmi ! lol

The only thing worth changing is IF the dvd drive is quiet, if it runs significantly quieter id change it

Obviously we don't know if it will have built in WiFi, but when the PS3 and Wii do, it would be stupid for MS not too. We all know the wireless adapter is massively overpriced, as you can get them for your PC for like £15.

As for quietness. Consoles always get quieter with each revision. It happened with the PS2. It's the one major problem with the 360 and again MS would be dumb to just re-release a jet engine..

Looks like a photochop to me.

Where do you plug in your optical audio lead if you use HDMI? Don't tell me that you need to have an additional cable plugged into the old AV port just to get an optical out.

Well, it looks like it still has the wireless adaptor connection on the back, so I'd assume it wasn't wireless out of the box.

I’m sure I’ve seen that picture before, like over 6 months ago.

If this is true that sound you hear is M$ asking all the early adopter to bend over.

I’m not convinced this is true

Looks believeable, though I'll be skeptical until Microsoft or some other source gets a better word about it. It's a bit crap for all of the millions of 360 owners that don't get the HDMI, however the HDMI isn't really needed at the moment anyway, as HDCP isn't a problem at the moment, or expected to be for a good few years, and it likely wont provide much difference in quality to component and VGA.

Well for a start, that picture shows that it has the mounting holes/clips for the normal wi-fi adapter. If it was built in, it wouldn't need those, would it? Wi-fi won't be built in, not everyone needs it. It would simply add to the base cost, which to be honest is what people look at when comparing consoles.

As for the noise the 360 makes, it's mainly DVD noise. What's little known is that the drive CAN operate in quiet mode (with slightly longer load times). In quiet mode the noise level from the original 360 is very acceptable. What this means is, MS COULD (although probably won't to encourage sales of the V2) release an update on live to allow a switchable performance mode of the drive. You could then simply choose performance or quiet. One downside is streaming games. GTA for example streams all the time, so slower load times may cause potential problems for games already on the market. It shouldn't be a problem for games that have yet to be released as the xbox would just need to cache earlier.

Of course, quieter fans would be very welcome and make the system virtually silent!

Adding wifi, which is currently available separately, would also cause an uproar amongst those who already shelled out for it.

Plus in general with a V2 xbox the accusations would fly that suddenly MS is playing catchup with the PS3's 'superior tech'.

Re: Optical Out

I would guess that the plug that goes into the HDMI/AV port is custom. I reckon it would plug into both at the same time giving you an optical out from the AV port and HDMI going off down the cable to the TV. Kind of a double plug or something.
