Americans...drinking too much water...death, for a video console ridiculous

If you were offered a console for a water drinking contest would you even think for a moment it could kill you ??

Hello Darwin.
Harsh.

I imagine many people here would happily have entered a contest like this had it been done over here, and I'd bet a fair few would be stupid enough to keep going for absolutely ages, because nobody thinks of water as lethal, even in large doses.

If anyone's to blame, the radio station should have known better. I mean, even water intoxication apart, I'm pretty sure forcing yourself not to whizz is bad for your body anyway.

Harsh.

I figured that overhydration and water intoxication were common knowledge, excuse me if I am not a dumbass like the radio station and the people who took part in this daft competition. :p

Very agreed. Most people dont KNOW that water can kill you, Most thing the more you drink, the more you will need to urinate, but other than that, its fine.

I feel there should have been tighter restrictions on the contest and a doctor presant. Clearly the family SHOULD sue the station.

I feel bad for her and her family.

Though it is "known" it isnt common knowledge... And people tend to think a competition like that would be safe... sorry, I normally agree with most of your posts, but this is one of the few times I disagree mate.

It's ok I could easily be wrong and it might not be common knowledge, in which case I completely agree with you that the station involved are the ones to blame. Everyone's definition of "common knowledge" is different, after all.

It's surprising the amount of people that don't know things... many believe that if you meet someone on the point of pure starvation, treating them to a massive meal at a resturant is fine, they dont know it could (more than likely) kill them.

Odd how you can die from such things really though :(

Aye, that's what happened to a lot of refugees rescued from Nazi camps after the war apparently. Lots of allied soldiers decided that it would be a good idea to give them lots and lots to eat.

Anyway, I think we're going a bit off topic now. Down right morbid in fact.

I only knew that due to one of those anti-drug campaigns where someone on E's drank too much water as she felt dehydrated, even though she wasn't, and died.

One glass of water every 15 minutes isn't much, when I've read of people dying due to drinking too much water it's usually several litres in a short space of time.

she only drank 5 small bottles at 15 minute intervals , i wouldnt expect that much would kill someone  :(

sad story :(

That was somebody else that quit after 5 bottles, she carried on afaik.

I think it was stupidly irresponsible by the radio station. Yeah the chance of someone getting ill was small but it was still there.

Bet the people at the station are crapping themselves now.
