Your Advice needed please!
Currently,I'm running a AMD64 3500+ cpu on an Asus AN8-SLI Deluxe with the latest Bios and seeking to upgrade to a faster Cpu as my new Os Vista is on its way.
I'm torn between four Cpu that i've seen and need your recommendation on which it would be beneficial for my motherboard.
1) AMD Athlon FX60
2) AMD Athlon FX55
3) AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4800+
or the Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4600+?

Which would you go for???

Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4600+ and clock it past 4800+, dual core seems more beneficial than single core FXs.

Edit:
fixed my newbish mistake

It's Socket 939 so won't have DDR2 ;)

I forgot to mention that it's a 939 Socket
I thought I didn't need DDR2 to run the Dual Core Processors.
Anyway,the memory I got currently installed is 2GB of Crucial Ballistix Tracer with DDR PC4000 • 3-4-4-8 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR500 • 2.8V • 128Meg x 6.

The memory you have is fine. DDR2 is for AM2 not skt 939.

If you truly cannot afford to go core2duo, then because you have vista coming I would deffo go with a dual core so that rules out the FX55. You would most likely get similar performance and overclocks from the other three so I would go with the cheapest (4600) and push it as far as possible.

Thanks Guys for all your Advice.
Seems to me that I would benefit greatly upgrading to a X2 4600+ and overclock
it to a 4800+ or more and save myself 30 pounds. :D

One other thing,
What Cpu fan should i get with the amd X2 4600+?Because currently I have a AMD standard fan that came with my current cpu.

Well if you buy a retail 4600+ you can just use the stock fan that comes with it, however if your willing to spend a tiny bit more may i suggest one of the following; tuniq tower 120, scythe ninja, big typhoon and my personal favourite arctic cooler 64 pro. its nearly as good as the others and its ruddy cheap.

good luck

Hello again Guys
I ordered a AMD 64 X2 4600+ and a Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro CPU Cooler with Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound. What should I overclock too and how high can it go??

would it be worthwhile moving from a single core opteron clocked at 2.9ghz to an x2 dual core?

not looking to upgrade mobo just yet so no core duo

Hello Guys,
I ordered a AMD Athlon X2 4600+ with Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro CPU Cooler and a Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound over the weekend and should receive them tomorrow.
What do you think,Good choice?

Depends what x2 you get. Why not a dual core Opteron, such as the 165/170?

What settings you running at the moment?

it would prob be the opty170 for the extra cache
but with an oc'd opty 170 to say 2.8 would i see much of a performance increase in say gaming etc

opty146 @2.9 2gig ram @250mhz
7800gt oc'd asus a8n sli deluxe
