I've completed my first PC build and have powered it up succesfully into the bios :D , but I am having trouble booting the Windows installation DVD.

I've a SATA DVD drive connected to one of the Intel sata connectors, the device is recongnised in the bios and I have selcted it as the primary boot device, but when I boot the pc the message "No bootable device" appears, as if the the DVD drive or DVD itself is not being recognised.

Can anyone suggest what I can check next to identify/resolve this?

Thanks,
Craig.

i had a similar problem with my gigabye DS4, i had to plug my HD's into the orange intel sata port and the dvd rom into the purple gigabyte sata ports. otherwise i found it didnt work too well! do you have two differnt types of sata port onboard?

Yes there are two controllers, 4 intel ports all internal & 4 marvell ports 3 internal 1 external.

I tried a couple of variations on which ports the HD and DVD were connected to, all with the same result.

Changed it to IDE, no improvement.

Strange, that's usually fine (with SATA HDDs at least), assuming the drive was connected to the (black) Intel SATA ports.

Try disconnecting all drives apart from the DVD and HDD that you intend you to install on.

try connecting the drive to the zero sata port the one that you usually plug your h/d into then plug your h/d into sata number 1 , look closely you will see the ports numbered . dont know if it will work but it says in the manual that the device plugged into this port will boot first

cheers

Thats how I have it arranged the SATA HDD and SATA DVD are connected to the Intel ports 0 & 1

I swapped over the connectors - no improvement :(

could it be a duff drive or you could buy a ide dvd drive from your local shop for about £12 install windows the replace with your sata drive then av a fiddle see if you can get it going

cheers

It's the disk itself it's not a bootable version

Not sure what to do now, can a bootable version be made from this or a startup disk used first?

have you tried the disc in another pc to varify if its bootable or not

have you set your sata dvd as a bootable device in bios? try pressing F8 and selecting the sata dvd to boot

Yes tried it on another PC today wont boot from it either. I tried the DVD while in logged into XP, Windows appears giving options: check compatabilty online / Install now.

then i take it its a backup as opposed to an original

either find your original disc or copy the files to your hard drive and make bootable disc with nero
