As some of you may know, ive been looking for a decent replacement for my Rover 220 GSI. No complaints with my car, just want a bit more behind the old right foot, so the natural progression was to a 220 Turbo hatch or Coupe.

After viewing a few cars, the problems seemed to lie with the bodywork, generally they have been pretty shocking, especially what was lying within my budget, dont want to be driving something that looks tatty, even if its a rover! :p

After some discussion with a friend who owns a 220 Turbo Hatch and lives near me, decided to go down and view a car wayyyy down South, so 560 mile round trip on Sunday and ive ended up buying a Rover 220 Turbo Coupe in Charcoal.

Pulled well on boost and seemed pretty honest, as well as being loaded with most upgrades bar forged internals and it came at a nice price. All modifications are 18 months old or less with around 15k at most on them, less for most.

Quick Spec:

A proven 249.8 BHP on high boost (approx 14psi).
GT28R turbo
Apexi AVCR - electronic boost controller
Front mounted intercooler with stainless steel mandrel bent pipework and samco hosing
320mm disks with brembo four pot calipers
Oil catch tank
Omp strut brace
Koni yellows, with pi springs.
Roverdose coldair box with lid.
Roversport center section (straight through), decat, and what I think is a mongoose backbox.
Full cream leather interior from a VVC with armrest and door cards.
Tailor fit mats
Klinger Headgasket
Gearbox rebuilt with steel caged bearings <23k ago
New AP (roversport) clutch fitted <1kmiles ago
New CV joint fitted <500miles ago
17" Toora Platinum 8 Alloy wheels.

The box crunches a little into reverse (pretty normal!), and the drain plug bolt has been overtightened and cracked the housing. Then bodged back in with some liquid metal but doesnt leak. Fluid could do to be drained and replaced with lifetime stuff, and perhaps the housing changed for a good one, should be easy enough to find a blown box in a scrappy.

Exhaust downpipe has a slight blow, but thats in the original section, so ill be looking to replace it with an aftermarket one...

Not sure what im going to do yet, the coupe body is tatty (but the price made up for this), so im very tempted to transfer the running gear into my hatch as the body on my car is pretty much mint. :)

Pictures will come when ive decided what im going to do with it (alloys are defo going as i dont like them and the leathers as i dont like cream!), as my mate paid for part of it, hes having the turbo, FMIC, brakes and boost controller i think, and ill take his original items (cant insure the car with the aftermarket turbo anyway and 250bhp isnt very sensible!). Still leaves me with a T25 turbo, FMIC and an upgraded MG ZS 282mm brake set.

Paid £800 for mine last year which is definatly at the high end of the scale, but the body was worth it. Has had plenty of little bits doing to it just to keep on top of stuff, CV boot doing was the main job really. If i rewound a few months then id have bought a honda engined coupe if i could have afforded it.

I cant get insured on a 220 coupe for some reason the insurance group is 15 whereas its lower on the gsi dont have any idea why though :/ so i have to get a gsi instead

Lots more chance of a coupe getting stolen as they look better as standard.

how about a 420? a much more cohesive shape to my eye than the hatch, and more stealth than the coupe

I thought about a 420 first and never really gave them another thought due to liking the hatch look (hence my 214 hatch) but it might be worth a try

Surely tidying up the bodywork would be a better bet than transferring it all over to your hatch? Plus the Coupes are nicer than the Hatches.

Karl, I thought it was all planned out?

Especially as some of the body panels and a few of the other bits have already been claimed from the Coupe ;)

Without seeing the Coupe, I'd say stick with your hatch. It's a pretty mint shell you've got there... not to mention the bodywork you've had done to it recently.

Rich, get a 420 GSi. They look so smart with standard SEi wheels, suspension and the boot spoiler. There's a BRG one near me.

Did consider doing this Fox but theres the hassle of selling my car for peanuts which im loathe to do really.

And i would say its looking at hundreds to tidy it up, most pannels have a scuff or ding, the doors rusting at the bottom quite badly and the guys smoked in it so its filthy and stinks. :(

These are the pictures the seller used from last year, was similar condition really, but the colour hides the marks well from a distance.

i don't under stand this "natural progerssion" lark. If i want a quciker car i look at everything on the market not just a quciker / unrelaible ;) versio n of what i have got

Ive no complaints with what i have, and find me something else with 200+ bhp for under a grand thats been reliable and insurable.

Damn you Karl, I was just going to say that.

For the performance and the insurance to go with it, there's practically nothing as good as a Rover Turbo. Not to mention the engines are pretty easy to work on, and thus you learn a thing or two in the process.

There's also the fun factor too. Lots of fun can be had in a quick Rover.

I do kinda like the 420 they just dont seem to flow so well It will really depend on what I can find i suppose, I will have to go and look at a 420 in person before i can make any real judgement
