Hi everyone,

I'm about to put an order in for the following:
- Vista x64
- QX6700
- 1 x GTX8800
- 4GB (GeIL PC6400C4)
- ...

The only thing left that i'm still not sure about is the motherboard. I've been doing some research for the past 2 weeks and now i'm even more confused.Almost each motherboard I’ve looked at had some issues with either Vista 64, QX6700 or Raptor X 150GB

Initially i was going to go with Intel Bad Axe 2, but there are reports of BSODs when running on Vista x64 bit with 4GB ram.
Then there was EVGA nForce 680. EVGA motherboard (according to various reports) has issues with some memory modules and again only when running Vista 64.
Now im left with Asus P5N32-E and Asus P5W DH. But then again P5W DH seems to have a dislike for Raptors X and I’m not really sure about the P5N

Any recommendations? I will consider any motherboard as long as it has 2PCI slots, supports QX6700 and doesnt have issues running Vista x64 with 4GB Ram. No need for SLI

Thanks for any help :)

Thanks. Thats one of the options i'm considering. Well not quite, 4GB seem to work on that motherboard with the older BIOS (version 2431). I might wait for a fix from intel or flush it with the older version

I thinking of placing the order tomorrow, so i still have 1 day left to decide :)

The rev 2 DS3 looks good and has been tweaked for quads.

Stay away from the 650i /680i chipset with quads as the FSB is limited to 300

I was going to post and ask if it affected the 650i as well, but you've answered that one.

I think it would have to be either the Badaxe or the DS3.

With the 64-bit version of Vista ofc. ;)

I was in a similar recently as I purchased Vista x64 Business OEM and new that I would need to make sure that the motherboard I used with it would have all the features that I would need over the next 18 months or so.

At the moment I have an E6600 but would be upgradeing that to a quad core as soon as Intels prices went down and more came onto the market in the first place. I'm guessing this should happen towards the end of this year. The ability to run newer 1333Mhz FSB CPU's was something else I was after. Another key feature I was after was a motherboard that was a good overclocker.

I also wanted SLi support with full 16x, rather than split 8x compatibilty as I tend to go for Nvidia cards and will be purchaseing two 8 series cards after ATI have released their R600. The R600 should force Nvidia to either lower their prices or release a higher clocked revised GPU as they did with the 7 series.

I also wanted a board with an addition PCI-Express 16x slot to take advantage of physics cards once their arcitecture had matured enough to warrant purchaseing in the first place. Alternativley this slot could be used for new audio cards. Finally I needed the ability to have at least 4GB of RAM, again for future upgrades.

Obviously a 680i based board was the only option given the requirements I had set myself and I ended up opting for the P5N32-E as it fulfilled all of these and because it was the cheapest 680i based board at OcUK at the time.

I second the P5B Deluxe IF you aren't going for a 2 x GPU setup.

This board allows even a raw noob like me to oc a XQ6700 to 3500.

True, I would like a Striker but the price right now is crazy. And t.b.h. I dunno if the £200 extra will bring much more than 3500MHz the P5B does.

Oh, and from what I gather, 64-bit is arguably pointless, the gains are not real-world noticeable. Consider that even one incompatibility with some tasty app you wish to run would make you ask 'Was it worth it?', all for the sake of a few points on a benchmarker

Just don't expect your GTX to run flawlessly on Vista if you're planning on ordering all this any time soon - the NV drivers for 8800s on Vista aren't yet fully stable.

Good luck with it anyway!

Thanks everyone! In the end I went for:

Intel Bad Axe 2
QX6700
GeIL 4GB (4x1GB) PC6400C4 800MHz
BFG GeForce 8800 GTX OC 768MB

and Aplus CS Black Pearl Luxury Alu Edition Case

Can't wait for the whole thing to arrive tomorrow :D

Hats off to OCUk.

Got the whole thing working over the weekend. Not a single problem. Bad Axe 2 + QX6700 (@3.2GHz) + 4GB Ram works beautifully under Vista 64 bit :D

My Windows Experience Index is 5.9 all :D

P.S. Flight Sim X is still slow though
