Apart from the O2 Orbit, does anyone know of any other SatNav phones that DON'T require bluetooth to work as a fully functioning GPS device.

The N95 looks great, but unfortunately I'd need WM for work related issues and Nokia insist on Symbian.

The best alternative (other than the Orbit) looks to be the M700 but I've read about 5 or 6 reports within the last 30mins that just can't give a definate answer as to wheter the phone comes with GPS software (and which one), other than the GPS and 3G issues have been resolved and that you need to activate GPS via Internet Explorer and nothing else.

Anyone got any firm specs on the M700?

Orange SPV M700 and equivilents also.

I didn't think that Orange had officially enabled the GPS on the M700 ? everything I've seen so far seems to suggest that you have to edit the registry on the phone to get GPS enabled.

Unfortunately Orange has disabled the GPS on the M700, so a firmware flash is needed. I have an M700 and it isnt enabled.

Look on the Orange site or check google for the HTC Trinity

First thing I did, didn't answer my question at all I'm afraid. There's a LOT of pages saying the HTC Trinity isn't GPS, yet the M700 is, and a LOT of sites saying that Orange doesn't supply and software, others saying it's only a trial to "Orange Maps", others saying you need to activate via IE and others saying you need a trout and fishfork.

The HTC Trinity is the SPV M700 and has a in built GPS. The problem is that it is switched off so needs a new ROM flash which can be found on xda developers. That would depend on whether you want to invalidate the warranty whcih is the reason I havent done it yet.

Ive seen reviews of the French model of the M700 and it can be clearly seen that there is GPS software installed on the unit.

I take it you dont want the orbit? Whats putting you off? I've got one and its great with gps!

Absolutely nothing, it looks almost perfect but of course nothing wrong with looking for alternatives.

Thanks Bear, appreciate the details and can understand what you mean about the Warranty, hence why I wanted to be 100%.

I'm near enough sold on the Orbit, the only thing putting me off was there doesn't seem to be a tariff I like.

Does GPS cost anything, like the maps etc? Orange have their Orange Maps which as far as I know is a subscription (albeit cheapish). For the average journey, seeing where you are or plotting a route, is that free? And what about if you need to see things like an aerial view or points of interest, again is that possible on the Orbit and is there a cost?

GPS is free, the o2 online tarrifs aren't bad. I took the online £40 deal then plan to downgrade to leisure £25 once my first 6 months are up. All in all battery life is good (7-10 days depending on usage) and it's a lot more durable than the Universal variants.

An orange employee recently elluded to the fact that the internal testing they did had found issues on the 700 as such they'd kept moving the release date back then followed T Mobile and disabled the GPRS. The XDA's are not over branded (unlike orange), the today screen task closer app is fantastic and it's needed to be rebooted all of once in the 4 months i've had it. Add to that the phone was free (49.99 for Co-Pilot inc car cradle and kit was well worth it). While I initially wrote off the Co-Pilot software after i'd tested TomTom and decided following it was more likley to get me a) killed or b) putting an insurance claim in for the phone and/or car I gave it a shot. It allows multi point routing, route planning, road priority setting including no toll's, custom POI's and actually has up to date mapping at least on par with TT or Navman if not better.

To put it in context I don't have to carry my speed camera detector any more, I don't need my old sat nav unit and all i've lost is laser detection (not much good as by the time it tells me i've been zapped it's too late).

Remember the £35 cash back through Quidco as well ... Orbit, car kit, software all for £14.99 is a no brainer.

Only other option i'd consider viable is an IPAQ/Jordana but that's if you are looking for a PDA first and a phone seccond though the bigger screen is nice for films.

Cor! Fantastic response Avalon, thanks for that. Definately sold on that now, so will make an order tonight.

Thanks again, really appreciate it.

After a bit of digging, it appears the GPS unit is enabled on the M700, but not freely accessible by software other than Orange's own sat nav...

The page above hasn't yet been updated to include the M700, but there's been a lot of info about it at work.

I see what else I can find.

The GPS isnt enabled on the non business versions of the phone. As a side note I have got mine working without flashing a new ROM, its just hidden in the Orange ROM.

You just have to install a reg editor -> HKEY_LOCAL _MACHINE -> CONTROL PANEL -> GPS SETTINGS. In GPS SETTINGS delete the DWORD called HIDE and add a new DWORD called GROUP and give it a value of 2.

Reboot the phone then look in settings -> connections and the GPS icon is now there so you can set up the ports.

Ive got Tomtom Nav 6 up and running on mine now and it seems to work really well, but have yet to really test it with something really tricky.
