Hi there,

I've been away from the PC scene for a while, so I'm looking for a little help in chosing a suitable graphics card for the occaisional game.

I don't want to pay over the odds simply because its the fastest thing since last month. What card should I be looking at at around the £100-£150 inc VAT mark? I want it to be silent, and not too power hungry either as it'll be sitting in an Antec Aria with a 300W PSU.

A look at the OcUK website seemed to show the HIS 1950 Pro 256MB PCI-E card as being the keenest priced of that particular chipset, but is it the one to go for? I've seen things like PCI-E power connector mentioned as an issue (does this have one?), and there's a thread further down about known issues with HIS? Would the Sapphire card with the Zalman cooler be a better bet? Is 512MB really neccesary or will the 256MB do? I don't feel the need to flex my e-peen by having large numbers in my sig, but if there are noticeable differences then it'd be something to consider.

Any help appreciated. :)

Both HIS and sapphire are quiet cards, But I'd probably go for the HIS one.

Performance wise the connect3D 1950XT is the best bang for the buck but it is power hungry and the stock cooler on it is very noisy under load.

no stick with the 256Mb, 512Mb is only needed for high resolution gaming.

If youre only on a 300w PSU the X1950 is a big no no.

7600GT should be ok tho as i ran one with a 300w PSU in an Asus barebone A64 3500+ system

Really? I thought I'd read that the X1950 Pro consumes 60W less power than a X1900XT did.

How might I find out the power consumption of each card?

The card would be going in a system with a C2D and a single Hard Drive and DVD-RW, if that makes any difference?

Id stay away from the HIS, absolutely atrocious those cards, absolute shedload faulty, id get another brand as HIS are dire. :)

Well they cant be that bad mate ive built 8 systems with HIS X1950 Pro's and are all running perfect and they are near enough silent. But meatloaf is right, you will require a new psu as a 300watt is no were near good enough

Just switched out my HIS x1900 for a BFG 8800 GTS 640 and the HIS was flawless the whole time I had it, only replaced as I thought it'd be rude not to match my 6600 with an 8800 :)
