Hi.

Anyone else doing the BETA?
I picked up a key yesterday & just had an hour-or-so playing the game just now.
Looks pretty good at the moment. I've hit a few times when the game slowed down to a grinding halt & I had to reboot to fix.
It's a bit similar to WoW from what I think so far.

Any thoughts?

I'm in, enjoying it so far. It is similar to WoW but so are a lot of MMORPG released recently - if it ain't broke etc. In my opinion LOTRO is very well executed. The graphics are superb and it runs pretty smoothly on my system (3200+, 1GB RAM, 6800GT). If you like Lord of the Rings (and who doesn't?) then I recommend checking it out.

I'm on the Northmoor server, characters name is Heruhelm. Look me up if youre on :D

For those who are interested CVG might still have some beta keys left: http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=159178

I hope im not too late :D

3gb client!?!?!? Christ, I definetly wont be able to download that in halls!

Grinding towards what?
What are you aiming to do in the game?
There is far to liberal use of this word "grind".

When I see it used in MMORPG threads I'm assuming the player in question is attempting to get to as high a level as quickly as possible.
I on the other hand play MMORPG's basically as a game and enjoy the trip - are you saying there is nothing to do in the game except level as fast as you can?

A whole load of us got in on the stress test weekend. General opinion was that the game was pants.

If you do a search there are quite a few threads on this already.

It depends what you want from your MMORPG. Of course you can just go out and grind mobs till you either quit from boredom or attain the highest level, and if you want a bit more of a challenge while you do that may I recommend you try Vanguard on a PvP free for all server. Or you can explore, quest, enjoy the world and its storylines, party with others, craft and accept that while you may not be charging towards the endgame content you are still enjoying yourself along the way. You don't go out and simply kill mobs in Oblivion and while its technically possible to "complete" Morrowind in under 15 minutes in both these cases you would miss out on all the content the games have to offer. I don't think MMORPGs should be approached any differently.

As for LOTRO I think it has been designed in such a way as to steer people away from "the grind". Theres a lot of content in the game and its well suited to casual players. There isn't the rush for levels and items that PvP inspires in MMORPGs. Instead you have the option to create a monster character at level 10 and enter a high level zone where you can attack the players there, complete quests and upgrade your monster. Whether this works out depends on enough people getting involved and I hope Turbine implement some of the large scale battles from the books as I feel there is a lot of potential in monster play.

But to each his own, if you don't like the game I'm not going to try to convince you otherwise :D

It's very quest driven; i.e fully blown Storyline that you can follow with your friends. Like Oblivion but with other people as well as NPC's :)

I got a key in my e-mail for the beta so i started the download, went to bed and when i got up it was only 1 3rd distance through the first part, speed seemed okay then it came out 'server Busy' and reset the download. Guess it had been doing that all the time i was in bed soaking up my bandwidth limit :(

Just got in last night, 1st impressions is that it is a good looking game, and it could be a very promising game all in all.

Have any of you guys done any exploring yet? That has to be the biggest draw for me at the moment, I'm dying to get out and explore Middle Earth. One thing I noticed looking at the map tho not all the area are available to access, Is this just a restriction in Beta or are all the areas not accessable in the game?

a friend of mine bought a magazine with the disk and beta keys, cost £7, he was rather dissappointed that all the beta keys had gone :(

Far, far, far to easy. Seemed a bit limited too, nothing new or innovative, other than some nice scenery. Not so much an online world as an online theme park, which is unfortunately the way a lot of mmo's are turning out these days :(

ive had some fun playing it, lvl 20 minstrel ;p ... and i agree that it was easy fighting NPCs which meant you didnt need to team up for most of the quests/missions, however the latest 600+mb patch has nerfed the game lots, for example now you dont deal as much dmg with most attacks having upto 30% less dmg !!
its not a bad game and is mostly good fun but i dont know whther ill purchase it, i dont want to get hooked into an MMo, best ive played since SWG imo
