Don’t you just love MS. Windows update gave me drivers today for the nForce4 SATA controllers on my mobo. My RETAIL copy of Vista asked for reactivation by phone. On the first automated call told by system that I had to purchase another license as my key was already in use! Two more calls and got it activated manually. The man said that I must have added new hardware, I said that it was part of the mobo. Oh what a wonderful life........

Hey, there was an update recently that supposedly fixed something like this, its in the MS KB database (cant remember the number) though i think it also came through auto update.

Certainly I updated the SATA drivers you speak of this morning and didnt have to re-activate.

Although before the patch i upped my BIOS and had to do what you said to re-activate.

Im hoping that patch fixed it :)

should have stuck with XP then :o

but that is the hazard of using a new OS, with archaic rules governing changes to hardware

Did you use same name during installation or is different one? cos I just found out that activation usual check same name like John Doe or J. Doe that wont work in different name when you reformat and reinstall and then re-activation -usual same name that how it work fine - Ive reformatted hard drive due to too much corrupted (using Vista Ultimate x64 OEM) and removed one DVD ROM + 1 Sony DVD writer and installed new Samsung Serial ATA DVD writer and then reformatted and then reinstalled Vista and install NF4 Ultra drivers and then activation went through no problems as it accepted. if you type different name then activation wont accept that how I did last time in XP Retail version so think it could be the person name that need same time when you reinstall Windows.. When we used XP SP2 and i put my dad XP OEM version and upgraded 4 motherboards and 5 hard drives plus refreshed installed as activation went through accepted without problems but I did phoned MS for new keys cos I forgot my dad name in full so I found it should be same as 1st one.

The patch is KB931573 and was auto installed on 01/02/2007. I haven’t done a bois update. From a little investigation it appears that this could be caused by a specific system setting being removed when a program runs with administrative credentials.

Too late for that , but that is part of the fun of being an early adopter...

I have an Nforce 4 Ultra - No SATA updates here :(

Could someone get the KB Number please?

It is an optional update and not a fix under the name of ‘NVIDIA Corporation driver update for NVIDIA nForce4 Serial ATA Controller’ I did a manual windows update and it was there.

So you're posting about something that happened a month ago? Seems a bit old to have a fresh rant.

This refers to when the MS fix to the problem was installed, that was a month ago.

If you actually read this thread properly, you would have realised we are discussing something that occurred today.

woops. I was going to test this for you too, but I installed the update and then rebooted and then realised I had reinstalled vista on Sunday and hadn't activated yet. Activated online fine though.
