I thought I would make a list of decent free software for the N95 that utilises its GPS/Wifi functions:

  • VOIP/chat software - One of the most useful functions of this phone using its 3G/HSPA/WiFi for free calls

  • GMaps - I find that this 'fixes' on to satellite better also it gives you the option of using google/yahoo/microsoft maps as well as other services. (No voice nav unfortunately)

  • Streaming TV - Skynews and CNN live streaming TV function (Press the centre button to put it in landscape mode)

  • Nokia Sports tracker - Integrates your smartphone and your GPS with exercise-related data-logging, stats and export to Google Earth.

  • PocketCaster - live video streaming from your mobile device and is capable of streaming content to several webcast pages, blogs, and social networking sites via GPRS, EDGE, 3G, or WLAN - eg you can post your vids straight to youtube/wordpress.:)

  • mail2web - Free MS Exchange-based email account. If you don’t use exchange mail you can forward your business or personal email to a mail2web account and use it with Nokia Mail for Exchange.

  • Nokia video manager - Video converter, conversion types include avi, mpeg, wmv and mov (DivX, XVid, MPEG-2 and Quicktime codecs)

  • Emoze is a free system that allows you to sync emails, contacts and calendar events between Outlook/Lotus Notes and your mobile device

Wanna use the barcode reader? You can make your own (Kind of pointless, I know) - http://qrcode.kaywa.com/

Text to speech - text message 'spoken' to you amusing for rude texts! (works on N80 etc, N95 needs future firmware update)

--------

Other software:

https://zyb.com/ - Can store/sync all your contact/calendar/texts online, then allows you to restore all that data if you loose your phone.

http://rcptones.com/ - Normal ringtones - Old school ringtones.

http://www.gosymbian.com/fexplorer_new.php - Fexplorer, lots of file managing abilities.

S60 S3 themes (works for N95)

You can find new applications aded all the time at Nokia Labs (a bit like google labs)- http://www.nokia.com/A4384041

------

Non free apps:

Gysnc - Allows you to archive your messages to a Gmail account and will group your SMS/MMS conversations as Gmail conversations to create the “thread format”

SkyeCaller - It allows you to assign a photo/video to contacts so when they call their ugly mug pops up on the screen.

Mobiola webcam software - use your mobile as a webcam.

------

Not software but v handy...

USB microSD keyring - I have been looking for something like this for a while, those microSD cards are so damn small!

Please can you guys suggest some more programmes!? Anyone know of decent games?

yeah you've been raving n95 in every thread now lol :P

Its probably gonna be my next upgrade though so I like the extra input personally.

I can't see nokia releasing another phone for a while though mind you so I just have to decide if the n95 is gonna be worth the extra £150 for an upgrade from the n80.

yeh sorry, I am bored and been waiting to get it :o :)

Yeh I know what you mean, theres not a huge amount of difference, the biggies are its speed, battery life and obviously the GPS. Personally I would prefer an iphone, wish they came out here in June, like in the US.

Anyone know of any decent remote control software? One that if poss allows you to shut down the pc/control itunes etc?

How do you install the mgmaps onto the N95. I am having a few issues

I copied across the .jad file into the phone, then in file manager clicked on the file and it installed. There is one bug with the software, sometimes when you exit it the screen backlight stays off - I found that pressing the on/off button remedies this.

What Network\tariff are you using?

T-mob apparently don't let you use voip or stream vids on the £7.5\month w'n'w deal.

In fact I don't think they allow voip on any...

Not sure how strictly they enforce this, mind you...

I am on w'n'w and have been using voip no problem, however I believe that if they detect you using voip they will give you a warning. If you upgrade to w'n'w plus you can use voip and streaming which is great.:) If you get an N95 you really should be on T mobile or 3 because of their 'unlimited' web plans.

i work for t-mobile, just to clarify,
W&W (£7.50) gives you 1GB which can be used on browsing on the phone but cannot be used to stream video, use VOIP or use the phone as a modem.
W&W Plus (£12.50) gives you 3GB which can be used on everything but VOIP.
W&W MAX (£22.00) gives you 10GB which has no restrictions.

if usage not included within the bundle is detected, a warning SMS is sent, if it continues another sms is sent, on the third warning a restriction is placed on the mobile which lowers the connection speed to 1/5 of standard. which would mean VOIP/streaming/modem usage would be almost impossible.

though ive never come accross anyone that has had the restriction placed on their mobile.

True. I've been using standard Web 'N Walk for connecting to the internet through my laptop and have once downloaded a 500mb file and no warnings have ever been sent!!

If you really get naffed off with it, just change your phones product code and update through NSU :p I just sent in a phone for a warranty repair and i just made sure i changed my product code back after flashing the phone. Also, if you're still within 28 days who cares right? lol!
