The summer has started now, Friday will be a breaking 25 degrees down here and my trusty Muddy Fox has been in the shed for months and previously it's been a bit battered by my younger brother who takes little care of things :/

Anyway, I have decided to leave the car at home and start riding to work mainly for the following reasons:

1: It takes me up to an hour to drive 5 miles to work in the mornings and sometimes even longer to drive back. Not only is this a severe bore (even though comfy with climate control and music) but it's also a pain because staying in 1st + 2nd gear the majority of the time gets tedious.

2: The latter part of the above seems to put the fuel dial into overdrive :o I used to get almost 100 miles per quarter tank (in this car) and now get 70~ since traffic has become worse.

3: I'd like to keep fit regularly and burn off the wasted energy that I spend sitting around at work at a desk.

4: To have an excuse to ooh say let something "happen" to my battered muddy fox so a nice shiny new one can be bought ¬_________¬

5: So I can think "SO LONG SUCKERS!" as I ride home in 25-30 mins flat passing the traffic queue on the way.

So yeah, anyone else got a bike that they put to good use?

I've cycled to work a few times this year, and I did all of last summer (was only a couple of miles though.

Its an awesome feeling sailing past traffic.

Couple of tips though:

Make sure your brakes are up to scratch. its quite likely people will pull out on you, having not seen you.

And stay observant, its quite dangerous sometimes.

Oh, and wear a lid!

Before I started working full time I used to ride to work a lot (same distance) but then stopped once I got into the hang of driving (plus the fun factor) but now i just want be able to breathe the fresh air and once home have a cold shower then just relax leaving the car for evenings, weekends and days off \m/

Brakes are good but not the best, the bike was stolen once but the coppers got it back, the thief swapped my mfx brakes with some ***** brakes off another bike he stole. Turns out the owner of the other bike said those brakes were his (WTF?) and I could not get them back :/

Excuse to buy a bike with disc brakes I think :p

Hydraulic discs f.t.w ;)

I've just replaced all the brakes on my bike, its a proper beast now with twin 15W lamps for riding in the dark :D

I hope you don't mean motorbikes because they're quite unsafe in the bicycle lane :D the other type of motorised bike is for grannies ;)

No lights for me :p don't intend to ride in the dark lol

mate....NOTHING is safe in the bike lane

This is true indeed but I have a plan to go halfsies (damn Scrubs!) on the wide pavements we have down here on the busier stretches of road where a cycle lane is either unsafe or not marked!

When I worked locally (sub 5 miles) I used to cycle, but it really isn't feasible anymore (over 30 miles to work). Really miss doing it though. I had two routes, one down the main road for when I needed to be quick and for when it was slightly damp, and one route through some fields (shorter and more complex) for when it was bone dry.

PS > 10,000 posts is rather common on the forums now ;)

I alternate between the Elise, MGF and my bike to get to work. If I've got a meeting it's the car but if not then I'll cycle. It's only about 5 miles and ironically I can get there quicker by bike than I can in the car.

I'm trying to get work to pay the tax free offer on a bike so I can do this as well. I live 3miles from work but takes ages in the car so would like to ride there and keep fit :)

I sometimes ride to work, but since it's only 12 miles it's barely worth the time and effort of getting all the gear on and dragging the brick out of the garage, then getting changed when I get to work. Still give the bike a run now and again just for the fun of it, but I guess I'd feel better about it if my work time wasn't clocked by the minute ;).

Cycling to work isn't feasible for me unfortunately. I have to do a section of motorway to get to work, so I need petrol power.

I motorbiked to work all last summer, gave up around december time when it started getting too wet and slippy on the roads for the bike. Started going in again by bike a few months ago. I've left it so long I found my car battery had gone flat this weekend. :o

I hate going in by car. Traffic is a nightmare, I just get too stressed.

Heh i motorbike all year round, but as soon as it gets really hot im going to cycle to work during the summer, gives me an excuse to buy a new bicycle aswell :p and it will keep my fit, only 7 miles so wont take long :)

My company were gonna do that but it's an administrative nightmare so they've just offered a £400 yearly bonus for anyone that cycles more than 50% of the time (minus tax unfortunately)
