What exactly is the difference between regular and OEM software? Are there and licence restrictions or can any old joe buy and use it?

Just building a new machine and since we're quite probably moving to VISTA at work thought maybe I should have it at home also so I know how it works!

I think it's pretty safe to move to Vista now as most things are supported ok?

I only ask as it's about half the 'normal' price so why would anyone buy the 'normal' version?

Also, is 64bit a good idea? I believe that's where I'd be likely to find most incompatibility issues so best to avoid?? As I understand it you can get a free upgrade to 64bit at a later date if you want?

Thanks in advance for any help!

It's all in the sticky at the top of the page - this is asked seemingly everyday.

The main point: OEM is intended for one machine - the license isn't transferrable when you upgrade your motherboard or bin it entirely. Retail is transferrable as many times as you like, as long as it's only on one PC at a time.

Also some places enforce that you buy a major component(s) (or a whole system) in order to buy it.

(whoops: read below)

u don't need to buy a major component or a whole system to buy oem software now. vista oem is for system builders. which means if u have built your computer.

But they shouldn't, as it's no longer a requirement.

Its not a requirement if the license is going from a OEM reseller to a system builder. It is a requirement for it to be attached to a fully built system if the license it going from a system builder to a third party customer.

As someone who builds PCs you are a system builder.

Like csmager said it's all in the sticky.
