PlayStation 4 To Replace The PlayStation 3 Within 18 Months

Sony seems to be on the ropes and needs an real boost for its gaming business. While the company officials remain mum, rumor has it that PlayStation 4 is already on development.

As you recall, Ken Kutaragi recently said that "I have the vision of PlayStation 4, 5 and 6, which will merge into the network", a statement which only serves to give some more credibility to such rumors.

Smarthouse.com reports:

“A new Playstation 4 could be less than 18 months away according to a Sony insider. The device will include the same chipset as the current PS3 but where it will differ from the current model is in the drive bay and in the attachment area. It will also include an extensive software suite for the managing of content being streamed to a TV or Hi Fi source.”

So, the PlayStation 4 would only be a re-worked version the current console, with some new or enhanced features. Hopefully, Sony will be able to seriously cut down manufacturing costs and, therefore, the PS3's retail price, because that's what's killing the sales in the first place.

Sony have lost the plot if this is true and really need to reduce the PS3 price NOW.
 
Smells like bs, actually on paper this looks to be what sega were notorious for doing, release console, realise that freshly pooped dog crap is selling better, drop support for console, release new console.

If anything that sounds more like a ps3 revision rather than a totally new console.
 
More like PS3X, like the PSX that was based on the PS2 and only released in Japan - can hardly call it a PS4 if it's a PS3 with more added features.

Quite a realistic idea if it's like the PS2 -> PSX.
 
Well it won't be called PLAYSTATION 4 at least. The number 4 is unlucky in Japan (I think it's associated with death?) so they will probably give it a name like PS3X and then go straight to PS5!

But I don't believe it anyway.

He has a VISION of Playstation 4, 5 and 6. Any big company will be planning for future, I expect Microsoft has started to think about its next console aswell. Financial suicide to release another system so soon, and Sony can't afford to lose any more money.

Besides, theres no way Sony would be able to release another new (as in PS4) console in 18 months. It took them far too long to get the PS3 out! :D
 
The moniker 'PS4' could work in a strange way that people would start thinking that the PS3's competitors are now outdated and 'last gen', thus flocking to the PS4.
 
What sensationalist journalism.

A re-worked PS3 is not a PS4. Just like a slim-line PS2 with network socket is not a PS3. Just like the Panasonic Q is not a Wii. :rolleyes:
 
I agree with what everyone else says - it sounds like a slim-line version of the ps3 with new firmware. PS3X not PS4 - I can understand how journalists that don't have a clue could get confused though.

As stated may well be a revsion of the present model rather than a wholly new generation - not really that surprising but think the "writer" just made up that it was version 4 of the playstation range
 
even MS wouldn't release a whole new console in that shorter time period even with BG deep pockets. As said above must just be some revisions hopefully they can manf. for less and pass the lower costs on to gamers :rolleyes:
