Decided to change the colour of the wheels on my car as the brake dust is horrendous. The wheels also appeared to have been slightly curbed, so I decided to paint strip them and fill in the scuffs.

Here's the method and pics:

First off the old man and I went to his workplace and used the fitting machines to remove the current tyres.

  • I power washed the brake dust/crud off the wheels and then used Nitromors paint stripper.

To be honest the paint stripper was pretty crap, I should have borrowed the stuff from work that we use on aircraft skins. Would have lifted all the paint + primer off in 2-3 mins tops.
  • Next up I sanded down the stubborn old primer as best as I could. The wheels were then cleaned again with the power washer.
  • Upon a closer look the wheels weren't curbed, just the paint was bubbling and hardened.

  • Each wheel was then sprayed with grey primer, two coats for the face of the wheel and just the one coat for the inside.
  • I whipped out the paint to be applied, Satin black and gave the front face two coats and the inside one coat.

The finished product, will be mounted on the new tyres tomorrow morning.

And just a little teaser, should look a lot better once it's all mounted and the car's sitting at the correct height.

I had a go at spraying the centre caps, but the paint wouldn't stick to the Honda emblem. Might have to rub them down removing the emblem sticker.

They won't be to everyones tastes, but I like them and they should give the car a more purposeful look.

Looks good mate.

Do the alloys have centre caps?

May be worth spraying the wheel nuts black too or is this not worth it as they will all crack and chip when the wheels are removed?

Tesla, they do have centre caps but the paint wouldn't adhere to the Honda emblem and looked cack. Will have to sort that out tomorrow.

355F512TR, it's my parents and hardly racks up any mileage (currently on 80k). Piccy:

Tim, no chance. This was pain in the rear to do, paint everywhere and my back is killing me. Next time it will be done over a longer period of time :p
