Far far away....
Right whatever i do i don't seem to be able to get the idle temp of my CPU below 40'c

So far I have tried:

Scythe Ninja
Noctua UF120
Lapping the CPU
Asus P5B Dlx Wifi, EVGA 680i (Checking for dodgy temp sensor)
Arctic Silver 5
Noctua thermal paste

I have also this week built a similar spec PC with the e6600 and got lower idle temps with the stock cooler!

I am sure I have mounted the coolers correctly, I have done it that many times!

Any ideas it is driving me mad now!

Make sure that the Ninja's bracket is not being propped up on one side by the capacitors on the P5B board. To check that there is no contact you could see if it is possible to pass a piece of paper between the bracket and capacitors. If there is contact then you would need to cut away a portion of the bracket.

I have a near identical system to yours a lapped e6600, lapped ninja, p5b wifi deluxe, p180 and 8800GTS 320MB, but have resigned to the fact that I have a hot cpu. Clocked at 3ghz it idles at 52 and loads at 63, but I have the case fans all at low and the ninja fan underclocked to the minimum voltage.

its just a hot chip i would guess.

on average (atleast it used to be like this) hotter transistors = faster transistors! 40c is pretty cold anyway. worry not :)

On my asus ai booster my cpu temp says its at 36 but on my core temp
program it says that core 1 is 48 and same for core 2 which one of these
should i be looking at as the truth. My e6600 is clocked to 3ghz.

Took the side of the case off for about an hour and see if the temps for the CPU drop a good chunk? I'd imagine they would drop a little, but depending how much they drop it could well be a airflow problem in the case, since the CPU's temp wouldn't be lower than the ambient temperature in the case.

Right before I pulled the side of the case the temperature was 37'c. With the side of the temperature is now at 31'c

It would appear that there is now an issue with air flow. The Noctua fan is blowing air through the heatsink towards the roof of the case, bottom to top.

In the roof of the case there there is the fan pulling air out along with a fan pulling air out of the case from the rear behind the CPU.

How can I go about improving the airflow?

not sure which h/s your useing at the moment .
i found the fan on the top of my case slowed down the fan on my h/s.createing the temps to rise a bit .
just a thought
