I'm fancying a change, so might ge thold of a copy of Vista. I'm running an Opteron 146, so not sure whether to get the 32 or 64 version. Is 32 bit still the one most people use?

I remember the 64 bit betas were flakier than the 32 bit ones.

Cheers

Think you've replied to the wrong thread mate, this thread's about Vista, not 'how to try and be smart for the shear sake of it.'

Hi

i might not have used VISTA so no experience, but becuase you have an Opteron and for the "future" I would say the 64bit version ?

I've gone for x64 2 days ago, just because it's more future proof, so far 2 app's were buggy ( nero 6, everest ) , nero I fixed bt getting nero 7, and everest is yet to be fixed, although the makers claim it supports x64...

Games so far work fine, but haven't tried much yet, just CoH and and Open TTD.

No driver problems?

Did I read somewhere that if you get the 64bit version the 32bit is actually included too? Might have imagined that bit.

Nah, Most drivers came with widnows for stuff like raid controllers etc...

Installed 64 bit nvidia drivers, 64 bit chipset drivers, and 64 bit sound drivers, and nothing more, just those 3, and so far they're problem free...

EDIT: Now that I think about it, I forgot to say, my cardreader, although installed fine, wont read sd cards in vista x64, when i inser an SD, and select the proper letter in Computer, pc freezes untill i remove the card.
And the ages old webcam I have wont install, but haven't checked for drivers for it yet cos I don't use it anyhow...

An ages old joypad did seem to install fine though and work fine.

Cool, reckon I might as well give the x64 version a go then and see what happens.

Thanks for the proper replies.

But he's right though, there are so many threads asking this very same question... a new one seems to appear every day because people don't do a quick search. Somebody needs to make a sticky regarding the subject I guess.

To be honest, and I can't believe I'm having to justify myself, I did search. I found a thread that linked to the FAQ, that had a whole paragraph on the subject. Now maybe I'm not using the search button correctly, but is a reply telling me to use it really needed?

theres a lot of threads about this....

I'm sure there is, I just didn't see them.

More importantly, I don't see why people feel the urge to have a go for asking a question. Too many people fancy them selves as part-time mods on here methinks.

Can this please get closed?

Cheers

I got 64bit vista when i decided to buy vista for me new build and like it a lot, i haven't had any problems with drivers or software all my games work and its been stable 24/7 since i built my PC a week and a half ago

If something is said to "support Vista" or is "WHQL Certified" then it has to include 64-bit drivers. The only driver compatibility issues that may appear are for more obscure or older items from manufactures who either don't create certified drivers or don't make any Vista drivers at all!

like Hauppauge they don't make some drivers for vista. i have a DEC-3000-s and they won't be making any drivers for it. so i have xp on a 10GB partition just for that one thing... its abit silly...

This is true, and you can swap between the 32bit and 64bit version at will, but I'd suggest you go for the 64bit version.

And there's no reason to to get defensive, but this question get asked literally every other day and I've found 4 relevant results on the first page of search results. It's not that we're unfriendly, it's just nice not to sound like a record all day when there isn't a need :)
