Wiiware: Original DLC games for Wii yaay!

From IGN

UK, June 27, 2007 - Nintendo has announced that original downloadable games are heading to Wii thanks to the WiiWare Channel with the aim being to let developers both large and small distribute their titles on the service. Unfortunately, the bad news is that it's not launching until early 2008.

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Amie explained that WiiWare is a chance for smaller and more creative games to be made available to Wii owners, with little or no risk to the developer. According to Nintendo the "remarkable motion controls will give birth to fresh takes on established genres, as well as original ideas that currently exist only in developers' minds".

Reggie added: "Independent developers armed with small budgets and big ideas will be able to get their original games into the marketplace to see if we can find the next smash hit. WiiWare brings new levels of creativity and value to the ever-growing population of Wii owners."

WiiWare titles will be available in the Wii Shop Channel and, just like Virtual Console games, can be purchased using Wii Points. Likewise, a variety of pricing options are planned. Nintendo is set to announce more details on WiiWare, including pricing structure, at a later date.

And yours is ... ;) :p

I think this is great news, been waiting for this for a while - i wonder if this will be introduced along with the possible hard-drive option?

Good move for Nintendo and indie developers. Xbox live arcade seems to be a huge success and it's only natural Nintendo would try and get a piece of the pie.

I think having a platform like this on the Wii will make it easier for amateur developers to get something published. While it's possible for amateurs to get a game published on Xbox live, I think a lot more would be expected in terms of content. With the Wii I think there will be a market for smaller, simpler games provided they make good use of the Wiimote.

Hmm... you think 8GB SD cards will be available and compatible with the Wii in 2008?

The Wii doesn't have a SD HC slot so unless Nintendo release a hardware revision or external usb adapter I don't think it will ever support more than 2gb. :(

My comment/view was in the title (YAAY!) and there was an extra :D in there for good measure. The thread was a quicky for you lot before I left my pc for some food tyvm. ;)

Its all good in my view and considering the VC was already kicking *** for dlc this can only help. Nintendo have never been strangers to redesigns and or add ons so a hard drive is deff a possibility, and one I welcome.

I don't think this is going to be as good as what people think y'know. Could be a killer for the Wii.

Killer? How do you mean? I can't see how additional DLC, optionally purchased, downloaded (potentially on an optional HDD) is a bad thing, or one that could 'kill' the Wii. It may not be hugely popular, admittedly, but then it could be a killer app.

Because unfortunately I'm a huge sceptic when it comes to things like this.

You have 2 avenues to go down, one of which is a hell of a lot wider and a hell of a lot more common.

1, the homebrew/indies/bedroom coder developers a killer game. It's been done like Matthew Smith, the Darling Brothers, even old school coders like Antony Crowther who can make hundreds of thousands for themselves AND make the gamers immensley happy.

Or 2.

As much as I love the Wii, there are too many 'puzzle' games out there. You're going to get the average Joe Public making something like Wiitris, where they think it's cool to use the wiimote to navigate things in 3d space. Yeah it's lovely, it's a great idea, but the novelty wears off.

Or you'll get some group of coders (who I have the utmost respect for) who will see something like GTA IV, pick out the best bits, perform some fancy rasterisation of graphics, ultra fast, blooms, HDR, AA+ AF+ AC/DC, STD whatever and the gameplay is absolute crap. What you'll end up with is a whole barage of rubbish and the Wii will be tainted because of it.

It's a fantastic idea, but I'm just worried that Nintendo may just throw a hell of a lot of games out to the public to say "Look what we've done" and the public just think it's rubbish.

Game developers are paid thousands of pounds a year for a reason, and as much as it's hard to admit for some people, that 24 year old hippie at the back of the class with a portfolio of great looking graphics but a rubbish head for practicality didn't get a job at EA for a reason.

It could work well, but things like this have happened behind closed doors before and they've never really worked well.

~J~, remember nintendo have the final say on what gets released on the shopping channel.

Yes I'm aware they will, you couldn't have a group of lads from Blackpool releasing "Blackpool Bash" which is a rehashed version of Manhunt 2. But what I'm saying is that you may have a flood of homebrew on the market which is good but not much variety and a little monotonous.

And?

Most people will still judge the Wii on its main catalogue of games, not some random downloadable content. The same way they do now. Nobody says, "Oh, get a Wii, it has a voting channel!" or "Get a 360 for Contra!". Those are optional extras, not the main point of the console, which is its "real" games.
