8800 GTS 640MB, it's much better.

In all seriousness, they're about the same. Have a look at the games your brother will be playing, and the benchmarks* for each card, to help you decide.

1gb 2900!!! its only 2-3fps faster than the 512mb, not worth an extra £60+ at all, and for the price of it you can get the much faster 8800 GTX. 
Either 640mb GTS, 512mb 2900, or if you can afford the 1gb 2900, don't, get the much faster GTX.
