Not a current picture it was taken when I first set it up, the plants are more established now and there is some wood and rocks in it. At the moment I’ve got 4 Gourami’s and a Plec.

I was given another smaller tank a few weeks ago so need to decide what to put in it!

some plants are hard to grow others arn't some need really high light and a lot of co2 so you may have had some of those but, there is also a thing where a lot of LFS (local fish stores) sell non aquatic plants they are fine in water for a while but after a few months they will die :(

Are they real plants Al? I tried to grow freshwater plants but failed several years ago.

Yeh the plants are real, I changed the bulb to an Aqua Glo one and that seems to have helped them grow. But red plants don’t seem to do too well.

Yeh one of my mates works in one and said that, he told me which were the best to get :)

We have 4 aquariums at present.

1 x coldwater tank probably only about 15l, current occupier is a single shebunkin.

1 x 20l Brackish containing 1 x Figure of 8 Puffer and 1 x Spotted Puffer fish

1 x 110l tropical with various Siamese Fighters, 4 x Angels, Gouramis and Catfish

1 x 500l Marine Tank, currently occupied by 2 x Percula Clowns, 1 x Regal Tang, 5 x Green Chromis, 2 x Cleaner Shrimps, a Starfish and various small crabs and z20let snails. This is still currently in the early stages, it has only been up and running around 6 weeks.

You should NOT have that much life in your tank so early in life, your tank takes a long time to establish its' bacteria and to mature, at the most at 6 weeks, you should have maybe a couple of VERY hardy fish, like damsels. Yuo should also be doing water tests every day to make sure you pass the nitrite spike before any life is in the tank. If i were you i'd ask your local fish shop to look after at least your regal tang and definitely your starfish for a month or so otherwise, they are likely to die in such a young tank.

in other news, i really miss my marine tank, i have no pics t o offer, but i had a hockney reverse flow 4x2x2 tank, fish and invert (1) only, stock included a regal tang, a lemon tang, a pair of percula clowns, a flame angel, a coral beauty, ********* eel and a hermit crab, he was well funny.

We've been visiting a very reliable marine specialist for weeks who we know and trust and has advised us on when we are ready to put in stock.

If anything Damsels should be put in last because they are a highly terratorial fish and so will attempt to dominate anything that comes in afterwards. They're also known for killing each other, the general rule of thumb is apparently buy 6 but only expect to keep 5. For this reason we have ruled these out altogether and have gone for Chromis instead which are recommended as a beginners fish.

We've done all our tests very regularly and the levels have stayed stable. Nitrite and Ammonia have both been at zero for the last 4 weeks.

i know that damsels are territorial, but a single small example, i.e a blue devil, will help your maturing cycle and will be no match to most other members of a community, levels in your tank will be level for around 5-6 weeks, then nitrites will 'spike' for a couple of days then relax, then i would only advise hardy fish, i can't see your 'specialist' being a 'specialist' for letting you take a starfish home to a 6 week old tank, or even a regal tang, infact, you shouldn't be taking more than 1-2 fish a week home as your fitration system can't handle the vast increase in waste with 10 fish at once and will probably break down. The starfish especially is not a hardy invert and should only be introduced to well established tanks.
