Anyone play Badminton?

Yeah I play at regional competitve and university level - used to play higher level as a teenager - i love badminton!

Will come back with a recommendation later :)

Badmintons alright, squash is a real mans racket sport though :D

I have a Head Metallix squash racket so if the badminton versions are as good then I'd recommend them.

Yes, playing in the Cambridge league and enjoying it immensely. Awesome for fitness and reactions.

Best thing to do is find a racket you like (a decent sports shop will let you borrow one for a week or two for a small deposit), and buy it online. You can also usually get last years models at a massive discount; eg my Racket is a Carlton Powerblade Tour that set me back £60, down from £150.

I play badminton at least once a week but it is against mates in what is usually a pretty casual game. platypus' advice seems pretty sound to me, it is better to test these sort of things out first, what suits me may not suit you and vice versa. :)

Crikey, do you ever have time to do anything other than sport :p?

I used to play weekly but since I have moved back to Aberdeen I haven't got round to playing it again.

currently I use a Wilson nCode n1 and a Wilson Hypercarbon 3.0 as a spare - damn i love em both to death lol! but they are over budget...

Yonex Cab is a good suggestion

Yep squash has its advantages, if your opponent annoys you it’s easier to take a swipe at him, trip him up etc because he's on the same side of the wall as you are, unlike badminton where you have to make the shuttlecock do the talking because your opponent is on the other side of the net. :D

I found badminton harder to play, you only get one chance with each shot because you can only volley, with squash you can sometimes be lazy and let it come off the back wall, let it bounce etc, etc.

In my day Carlton made good steel rackets and they’re often seen in their scores at car-boot sales

I played a lot when I was younger. I can't even remember why I stopped - just realised one day that I hadn't played for ages. To play competitively at a high level in my area you had to have rich parents - it could be very expensive by the time you added up all the costs.
I still have my old racquets - a carlton aerogear F800 and a wilson 95-something. They were top quality at the time!

I played 4 days a week from the age of 8 to 21. Have had a year off now, but I used to be one of the best players at under 18 level in Ulster. The racket is a tricky subject, but I'll do a quick run through for you.

Usually the more expensive ones are better suited to better players. They tend to be lighter at the head than cheaper ones because better players can generate more power through technique. Lighter heads also improve accuracy.

At your level, I'd say aim for a racket at around 85-90g. Look for a slight head heavy racket and possibly a little bit of flex in the shaft, which helps generate some more power and will reduce the risk of tennis elbow.

Now, the most important thing of all are strings and tension. For the sake of £15 a restring will transform a racket.
The higher the tension, the better the accuracy and power* but the sweet spot reduces. I used to play with yonex BG85 at 29lbs, but this was a restring every 2 months per racket pretty much.
Try Yonex BG 65Ti at around 21lbs. This will give you a good balance of power and accuracy and as you technique improves you can up the tension without sacrificing power. Don't try a tension too high too soon as it WILL give you tennis elbow.

*Power increases drastically up to about 23/24lbs, after which it falls off slightly, but tensions above this are used by players with good technique and as such does not suffer too much.

Try this one with a restring http://www.centralsports.co.uk/shop.php?page=yonexd&product=5827

comes in at about £45

Hope this helps a bit :)

Just add, I have played football, Gaelic football, rugby and squash and singles badminton is the hardest game I have ever played. I've never been sick after a footie match (the pub doesn't count ;) )
