Physics a reason for DX10 and Vista. No great physics in XP/DX9, Crysis

How many expected this for Crysis? Not something I expacted, thought DX9 had full physics. This looks like multiplayer only.

“As for the DX9 version we won’t have physics and day and night cycle in-game. That means you won’t be able to shoot down trees and/or alter any other objects than vehicles on the map. Additionally the time of day setting doesn’t change dynamically.”

What happens if i buy a DX10 card (looking at 8800GTX) but stay with windows XP ? am i still limited to dx9 servers for crysis ?

I kind of figured this after trying to shoot a tree in half in the MP beta. I thought it was just not in the beta as in not finished fully but now I know.

Too much for a few pointless effects. :p

have you looked at your sig recently? :p

If you argue DX10 is 'pointless effects' then could you also not argue that DX9 was also pointless over DX8? Do we really need SM3.0 with HDR?

If the AI* changes the way it behaves due to light levels and also changes it's tactics because you've just destroyed it's cover, does that not improve gameplay? (*also applies to human players)

Fair comment, but I mainly went quad-core out of boredom (maxed out my E6300 and needed something new to overclock, the Q6600 is stunningly cheap now) and I went 8800 Series for DirectX 9 performance and brilliant image quality. :p

One thing I won't do is buy a copy of Vista just so that I can shoot a few trees down and fight in the shade.

Especially since Vista hates me and the feeling is totally mutual. :D

So this means I need to spend £400 pounds on upgrades to see trees get cut down
Go to your local DIY store, chainsaws can be bought for less than 400 quid :p

Hardly surprising this, if you want the best out of Crysis you need Vista and a DX10 card, I guess this wil be the 2nd game I will install on my Vista partitions next to Bioshock.

If there is a noticeable performance increase in DX10 for Crysis then i will go to Vista. But if i can get all the physics effects like the tree cutting, building destruction etc in DX9 singleplayer, then i dont mind too much.

Vista is a nightmare for serial upgraders too. I just replaced mobo etc and my genuine Vista key didnt work so had to ring MS only to be told it was a one off key.

Im sure that argument will find its way onto Utube sooner or later. Needless to say ive got a key :D

So, you cant do day / night effects or have trees getting destroyed in DX9? Seems like a marketing ploy to me or an excuse to say this game is better in dx10.

Yup even Star Wars Galaxies had a day and night cycle, Black & White did too back in the day. As much as I'm looking forward to Crysis, "cutting trees down" being one of their main selling points makes me worry about the story and gameplay a bit.

If you knew you were going to be replacing your motherboard quite often, you should have bought the retail version instead.
It's been well documented and told enough times on here that the OEM version will only be valid for the first motherboard it is installed on.

It isn't a nightmare, OEM license is tied to the hadware, Retail is what you should have bought.

Anyway, maybe because of the increased efficiency with DX10 it allows the people running DX10 more effects with the same framerate, maybe they could have done the same with DX9 but perhaps that meant a huge drop in framerate?
