So I am looking at more ram atm and not looking to spend to much, I'm just wondering whether I should go for 4gb of slower cheaper stuff or if I should get another 1gb of ballistix so I have 3Gb of high speed modules.

SO I did a mini test in the last half hour and would just like to share it. As titled I tested the same kit (2Gb Ballistix PC5300) and just used 2 different divider options and left the timings alone:

3Dmark2001:

1.1Ghz - 45562
690Mhz - 43286

CSS stress test:

1.1Ghz - 168.03
690Mhz - 162.87

Fear:

1.1Ghz - min:42 avg:83 max:203
690Mhz - min:41 avg:82 max:200

Crysis Demo:

1.1Ghz - min:16.21 avg:28.48 max:34.65
690Mhz - min:14.66 avg:28.45 max:34.94

So virtually no difference as can be seen, but the 2fps drop in min frame rate in crysis is slightly worrying...

I was looking at:

OCZ 4Gb PC5400 kit which is on this week only for a very good price, trouble is it doesn't overclock for ****.

Or 2 of the OCUK Value 2Gb PC6400 ones which is also very cheap but it's ugly, no heatsink and only comes with 1 year warranty.

Or 2 of the Geil 2Gb PC5400C4 ones but then there's no guarantee if 4 sticks will overclock well.

Or alternatively just get another 1Gb Ballistix PC5300C3 for £35 and just tell myself that I don't need 4Gb of RAM. It is pretty much guaranteed for 1.1Ghz to match my current one, and it looks sexy ;)

Reason for upgrading is pretty simple really, was playing Gears of War today and look ages to load up and even longer to exit the game (didn't actually see the desktop until a minute later), also I get some odd stuttering in game as well. Also it's very cheap now don't think it will go any cheaper? so why not?

why not get 2gb of the pc5300 crucial, its like £50 for a 2gb pack. 4 sticks generally seem to be overclocking fine, better than most 2gb sticks. i got 4x pc6400 crucial recently, 2 sticks would do1.25Ghz easy, 4 sticks, i have no clue what the max was, did 1.15Ghz fine. i was testing new cpu with the 2 sticks to find cpu max rather than memory max. i stuck the 4 sticks in and needed lower divider so i can push the cpu further.

LOL just realised the PC6400 ballistix is £7 cheaper than the PC5300! cheers.

*EDIT* went for the 2x OCZ 2Gb PC6400 XTC in the end
