As the title says, i've got this mobo: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-088-GI and im just wondering if anyone who has this mobo has tried successfully to fit the Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme cpu cooler on it? I got the cooler in the post today and it looks massive... i thought it would fit after doing some rough measurements but now im not sure. Just wanted to know if anyone knew if it was possible or not before i started.

Yeah it should be possible, however i have had to mount mine 90 degrees round from the normal mounting position, the CPU socket on my gigabyte board is lower than my old Asus Striker, as it was hitting the bottom of my case

Hmm, thanks, ill have to try and wrestle it in this weekend then. I'd read about the Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme bases not being flat, and sadly mine followed the trend, its got a slightly convex curve on it :( cba to lap it right now tho, maybe when i change cases or do a major upgrade.

Yeah i had to lap mine , i realy dont have a clue as to why they make them like that . If you want any help lapping it let me know, or take a look at the thread in my sig :)

Wow, mine isnt as bad as yours was :D

I might lap it at some point in the future, if only to learn how to do it. I got some Arctic Silver at the same time, ill have to read exactly what to do with it, cos ive no idea. Any tips?

You luckly sonofa...:p

There are two ways that i normaly apply thermal paste.

1) A small blob in the middle of the cpu and then plonk the heat sink in top of it. (Prob the best way for you as you heatsink isnt flat)

2) Apply a small ammount the the center of the cpu and spread it round with a stick/finger/pen/whatever comes to hand untill you have a thin layer all over the cpu. (I would only do this if you know your heatsink is flat)

:D

Hope you can see from this:

Im just using a business card there, so its not entirely accurate, but you can see the little bit of light coming under it tho, its not too bad i guess, what do you reckon?

Its no to bad. I would use my first method of apply thermal paste, however i would lap it when u get then chance as it will greatly reduce your cpu temps. When you do attach it i would keep an eye on the cpu temps (use coretemp) and dont let it go above 65 ~70 degrees

Yeah i was planning on sticking a fan on it, if your just going to be using one is it better to have it blowing or sucking through the stack?

I just thought i'd let you all know how it went:

It took a while as i was putting in a new HD and fans + fan controller, but the temps are already 6 degrees or so lower at full stress, hopefully ill get more when the termal paste has cured.

Ill let you know.

Just to ressurect this thread a bit:

I fitted a new psu today and in doing so i knocked the tower a bit and it moved slightly. So i just sort of 'slid' it back into place, its not loose as such, but i can slide it abour under the clamp.

Anyway, the temps are about 5 degrees higher than before, did i disturb the termal paste or something? Or should i slide it about a bit on the cpu till i get better temps or something?

Make sure the 4 retention screws are as tight as they can be.... Give the thermal paste some time to 'bed in'.... If you are still not happy then maybe try remounting the whole thing.
