What would you put in a bang for buck gaming rig?

I've seen a fair few comments on here trying to discourage people spending unnecessary cash on components, so what would you use if you were building a decent bang for buck gaming PC?

It's always tempting when choosing parts to take a peep at the next level up hardware, then justify it coz it's only ten or twenty quid more expensive. I've been playing this game with CPUs at the moment, I convince myself an E2160 will be more than good enough for my needs, then I creep up to an E2180. Several days later a end up thinking of a Q6600 or better.

I'm still saving for the gaming system I want, but will probably go for something like an Abit IP35 board, E6750 Conroe, 2GB of Corsair DDR2 XMS2-6400C4, Corsair HX 520W PSU, 8800GT (or maybe I'll creep up to an 8800GTS ;)). Still deciding on the case.

Ocuk value ip35 pro board
E2200
8800GT (OcUK/ other cheapest) + that good cooler that everyone likes
Corsair 520W PSU
4 gig of 6400 RAM

Pretty much what Ben M is suggesting really although I've changed the motherboard since this is all about bang for buck, you could also easily get away with a cheaper PSU but the 450w Corsair is out of stock (Akasa, Antec or Enermax amongst others do suitable options). The Akasa Zen is very good for a cheap case and the Arctic Freezer 7 Pro is very good for a budget heatsink.

//edit and you probably don't really need 4gb but at the price currently it does make sense.

Out of interest, if I was to put 2 x 2GB RAM modules in an XP system, apart from XP not utilising it all, would it be likely to cause any stability issues? Or would it be best to store one of the sticks away, than install it the day I decide to take Vista on?

Thanks for the replies chaps.
