Hi :) I've poked my nose around this forum a few times in the past couple of weeks due to random iPhone questions.

Anyway, tomorrow I'm off to the bullring apple store to checkout the glossy/matte screens on the Macbook pro's, after which, I'll head over to uni and order one.

£1104 for the base Macbook iirc.

Firstly, does anyone have any opinions on the glossy/matte debate? I'm probably going to go glossy, as I use my machines mostly inside and like the rich colours provided by a mirror finish.

Well yeah, thats it, a random "getting excited" thread. I had been leaning towards OSX pre-getting my iPhone, that just pushed me towards the edge, and the recent penryn updates tipped me over ;)

I had considered the medium-spec Macbook for £400 less, but the poorer screen along with all the other MBP goodies, combined with it being my soon-to-be main machine means I think its "worth it".

I'll pop some pics up once I've order and it's arrived, everyone loves seeing a Macbook Pro boxing, as they all look unique, right ? :D

Go for the glossy screen, they look a lot nicer imo and the colours look a lot better.

Check out the new kit, you will love it. The new MBPs have the MBA multi-touch trackpad (all zoomy and double clicky and that) and they have just upped the spec.

I would say go for the hi-rez glossy if you can stretch for it, although it seems to be a matter of personal preference. I have a MBP and it absolutely rocks, without doubt THE best computer and the best software I have ever used.
 
Never used the matte screen, but the glossy screen is great on my MacBook the colours are something else its just great :).
 
Im also very tempted to buy one of these, i'll probably be looking into getting one once i start university in September. Looking foward too seeing what you think of it Mr.Stu. :)

Spoke to the Apple guy in the store (NYC) and he had both in stock, I looked at both and bought the matte (which was the one I preferred & that he recommended).

Sat outside, MBP on the table, California coast about 50yards away, the matte screen was only just visible (reflections etc), so I daren't think what the glossy would've been like!

I'm sure if you can prove your a student: Enrolment letter, NUS card you should be able to get one instore? :) It'd be worth asking as it'll mean you'll get one sooner ;)
 
Yiu can get same HE discount in store as you can online :) just bring an NUS card or some official form of University acceptance and some photo id :)

the store will typically be ok with that for the discount :)
 
Oh, well in the case, I could have it this time tomorrow :P

Guys at apple support told me you can only get the standard education discount in store, which afaik, is less than the HE one.

Will find out in the AM I guess :D
 
Nah I work in a store :) you can 100% get HE discount in store ;) 15% on Macbook pros, £58.75 for Applecare instead of £279 discount on other things like Mice, Keyboards, software. Apple only though :)

To confirm, when buying with HE discount in store, does that include the 3 year warranty you get when ordering online via the HE store?

[edit]it doesnt include the 3 year thing afaik, it's a big discussion point in the retail stores, afaik and have been informed the online 3 year has a few limitations, it only supports hardware, no telephone support, no software support. It also means Applecare will not pickup the machine for you, you will have to pay for shipping or to take it into a retail store.

To clarify, what I believe to be the case, (may not be entirely accurate). Is that if you purchase a machine through the Universities website you get the limited 3 year hardware warranty, no software or telephone support and no ability to get Applecare to pick the machine up for you.

If you buy a machine in store or phone them up through HE discount you get the normal 1 year hardware/software support and 90 day telephone support and the ability to have the machine collected. The £58.75 for APP extends this to three years hardware/software/telephone support and the ability to have the machine collected and returned with no charge afaik again for 3 years,.

You get the full Applecare instore, the free one you get from the telephone store is just like VaderDSL says, three year hardware warranty. It's well worth £58.75 for the full on Applecare from a store to be honest.

And yeah all you need in the store is your student ID for your Uni, or an NUS card. Plus you get to walk out with it in your greasy mitts.

SOME unis get an even better discount than you can get instore, but that's dependent on the Uni.
 
I've had both the glossy AND the matte.

In my personal experience the glossy is easier to maintain (Glossy; wipe it with a cloth to get rid of smudges vs. matte; breathing and wiping like a madman) and the Glossy definitely has the WOW factor.

Reflections weren't an issue for me, and may be exaggerated in the brightly lit Apple store, that said, the HD res Glossy that I had was stunning.. I'd go back everytime! :D
